The smaller and lighter Verizon Wireless V640 EV-DO ExpressCard operates on the Verizon Wireless broadband network and is capable of speed bursts of up to 2.0Mbps. The built-in VZAccess Manager allows you to increase your productivity by easily managing remote access connections and business applications. The V640 ExpressCard also features a multi-color LED service status indicator for data throughput monitoring and a flip-up antenna to enhance RF performance while on the go. Other features include Windows Vista compatibility (as well as 2000 and XP) and Mac OS X compatibility (10.3.9 or higher).

Stay Connected
The V640 is compatible with Verizon's BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess high-speed wireless data access plans. That means you can get the broadband-like speed you require to work efficiently outside the office.

A Verizon BroadbandAccess plan will give you the freedom to stay productive and connected whether you're on the road or in a meeting across town with broadband-like connection speeds. You will also receive NationalAccess service when outside the BroadbandAccess rate and coverage area. NationalAccess is available in thousands of cities and towns.

The NationalAccess plan is Verizon Wireless' national wireless Internet service, which enables users to access the Internet, email, attachments, and business applications with a laptop at average speeds of 60-80 kbps and bursts up to 144 kbps (you may experience slower data speeds).

Before checkout be sure to choose one of the previously mentioned Verizon wireless data plans to enjoy Unlimited access for Internet browsing, email, and Intranet access. Chose a plan that's right for you. Without a specified Verizon data plan, data service will be charged at 0.25 cents a minute.

Card Design and Features
The V640 comes with VZAccess Manager software for easy connection management right out of the box. Easy to install and use, the card features a high performance, flip-up antenna for increased speed and coverage allowing you to easily connect from the comforts of your favorite coffee shop, in a board meeting, or on your sofa at home. The card's intuitive user interface is easy to manage while the bright service state LED indicator lets you know signal availability and data transfer status at a glance. There's even an optional external Antenna Connector for times when you need to boost connectivity.

VZAccess Manager is a new customizable tool that lets you manage remote access needs across the country. VZAccess Manager, developed by Verizon Wireless in conjunction with one of its parent companies, Vodafone, is available for BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess wireless PC cards, and Mobile Office Kits. It allows mobile professionals, business, and enterprise customers to easily access Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess services, and their own Wi-Fi and dial-up networks so that they can stay connected wherever they go.

I had to reconnect every 3 minutes, and the average download speed was about what you would get with dialup. It was pitiful, and Verizon had to refund 5 months of service where I had to connect an astounding 1400 times.

However, in the last few months these guys are getting their act together. I've had trips from Pensacola to Jacksonville and Tampa to Jacksonville where I maintained a constant connection, and was able to download large files and email while enroute. I just checked my connection speed and got an average of 535K down, and 85K up. Thats 10 times better than it was a few months ago, and will get better with 3G service.

If you need the internet on your laptop wherever you go like me, then this is finally a good option for a lot of people. The service is expensive, but you can get a USB adapter for your desktop at home to plug this V640 Expresscard in to.

You can also get deals on these card on the web and Verizon will program them for you regardless of where they came from so if you find one for CHEAP dont hesitate to take it into a Verizon store to have them set it up for you.

A year later and I'm finally happy with this service, but I'll take credit for Verizon's improvement cause I spent most of the last year screaming at them on the phone because of connection speeds of less than 18K at my home. 4 googleschnitzles

I've own a Verizon data card for over a year now and the connection speed is becoming extremely slow. I tested everywhere including in house, on the road, airport etc. The avg download is about 400K and upload 140K. These are significantly slower than what I was promised at the store and the results of my tests when I first bought it (800K/400K).

I called Verizon. The tech support guy was very rude and basically said this speed is normal and "broadband". He also tried to come up with excuses such as you are indoor although he had to agree that my signal strength was good. He also said as long as you could connect, you couldn't argue because there was no promise of the speed on the contract. (So basically even if your speed was 1K, they wouldn't see a problem with it.)

My conclusion, I will never use Verizon again.

The difference between Dec 2006 when I signed up and now is striking. I used to get very fast performance, but over the past year it has steadily decreased. Seems verizon has done little to nothing to maintain, expand their infrastructure, at least IMHO.
