The Vermont Life Guide to Fall Foliage: The Leaves and Landscape of a Northern Autumn is a guide for nature lovers to getting the most out of experiencing autumn in Vermont. Written for casual travelers and amateur naturalists alike, The Vermont Life Guide to Fall Foliage includes statewide walking, driving and bicycling tours; maps of tour routes; a handful of color photographs of natural communities and species; extensive black-and-white illustrations to facilitate tree and shrub identification; a list of extensive references and resources for further reading; and more. From an overview of the turn of the seasons in Vermont, to a tree-by-tree list of the most commonly found species, to discussions of the advantages and disadvantages of each walking tour available, The Vermont Life Guide to Fall Foliage solidly lives up to its title.

It is probably my fault for not grasping the little books description. The book contains many drawings of leaves and plants. I was expecting mostly photographs. Lesson learned: Read and grasp the item's description.

This small book of less than 100 pages is a companion guide to fall foliage with focus on Vermont. It has three primary sections: one on the landscape, one covering trees and leaves, and the third offers information on driving and walking tours. I loved the sections on the landscape and tours but could have done with more information in these sections and less in the middle section covering the trees and leaves, with each tree leaf taking up two pages with illustration and verbiage. It is also an expensive book for the size and information provided. Having said all that there is a lot to like about the book with the descriptions of the different landscapes you'll find in Vermont and where to find them. However, it is in the last section with the maps and descriptions of scenic drives and walking tours this book recovers from being a somewhat naturalist's guide to being a book for those wanting to plan a trip to the fall foliage of Vermont. I would not let this be your only guide book to a fall Vermont but a worthwhile companion to a more detailed book of things to see and do, and places to stay.
