Just Wish It Had "Turn,Turn, Turn" & "I Can Tell By the Way,

you dance, you're gonna love me tonight"...
While Vern Gosdin is regarded as a hard country singer, the interesting fact is that he and his brother Rex actually started along the same path with those who pioneered California Country Rock music. For starters, Vern and Rex teamed up back in '63 with a teenage prodigy on the mandolin fresh out of the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers by the name of Chris Hillman and formed the "Hillmen"...with songs like "Ranger's Command" and "When The Ship Comes In"... The two brothers then went and helped out another former Byrd, the late Gene Clark when he exited that band in 1966 and played with Gene on the "Echoes" album. Before leaving L.A., going Nashville, and making that hard right turn towards hard country music, Vern went on to play with or hang with the greats of Cal Country Rock - Hillman, Clark, Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Larry Murray. The Gosdins' poignant "There Must Be Someone" was recorded by Gene Parsons on the Byrds "Easy Rider" album. Unlike his contemporaries, Vern chose to go hard country and became a straightforward country singer, as evidenced by the tracks on this cd. "Set Em Up Joe", the classic "Chiseled in Stone" "This Ain't My First Rodeo" are the highlights, and you can't beat the price. Still it would have been nice to have heard his version of "Turn, Turn, Turn" with Roger McGuinn sitting in, or Robb Strandlund's "I Can Tell By the Way You Dance" which became a major hit for Vern on this cd (after all, it is called "Super Hits") - or the honky tonkin' "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke, and Loud, Loud Music" that his contemporaries the Burritos recorded both in the Chris and Gram heyday and after in the Gib Guilbeau-Sneaky Pete version. For someone like me though, who knew of Gosdin's reputation and from whence he came, this cd represented a good, solid introduction. The price isn't bad either. Just remember to expect Hard Country, not Country Rock. Vern sings it right, and sings it tough and tender.

At's what I'm talkin 'bout,

Verne Gosdin is a dang genius. This treacly album is the perfect guide to the place where you are, slumped cricknecked against the wall in the corner of a dive bar on Magazine Street under last year's Halloween decorations after your fifth JD'n'Coke and wondering what's the point of getting home, and what the heck is home anyway, and why don't I have another one with my friends 'cause I haven't seen 'em for quite a while. This is what country music is all about. Check out "This Ain't My First Rodeo" and "Tanqueray". Brilliant. Thanks Verne.

The voice,

Here's one of the absolute finest voices in modern Country Music. Noone sings a song like Vern Gosdin, and despite what the charts may have reflected, Vern was one of the leading traditional artists of the late-'80's through early-'90's. This Cd contains 10 hits, many cowritten with the legendary Hank Cochran. Are there other hits that should have been included???....sure. But, this selection of 10 (including "Set 'em up Joe" and "Chiseled in Stone") is superb. Outstanding sound and recordings; all original recordings....no re-recordings. Buy it.

You are gonna LOVE Gosden! Don't think so ? Give a listen to "If You're Gonna Do Me Wrong,Do It Right". This is a classic soulful voice with everything you ever wanted to hear in a genuine country artist. No phoney "boosting" like so many "country" singers. Just the real deal! Unfortunately,Vern has had some health issues and we are probably never going to get anything new out of him ever again so, take whatever is available and enjoy his music

I once saw "the voice" in concert along with the great George Jones at a Merrillville, Indiana arena and he was unreal. He was on equal footing with the possum thats how powerful and strong this mans voice was. This may be the greatest deal on the planet for a cd with great classic songs that never get old. Listen to this man compare it to the fluff that comes out of Nashville today and see what I mean. Invest in this one you will be glad that you did.

In the true nature of traditional Country Music Vern Gosdin has created a CD that every music lover should own. The songs vary and bring you through a variety of emotions from sadness -Chiseled In Stone- to the more light hearted as in - Set 'Em Up Joe. All the songs on this CD are worthy of a "listen to". They will tug at your heart strings and make you want to hear them time and again.

If you like current "new" country music, I should warn you this one is not from the current style.
If you like "real" country before it got infested with bad pop music, you will LOVE this CD. This is from the good old days when country music was music to drink by after your woman left or you threw her out. :) Kind of kidding there, but not kidding that this is the good stuff!
