Book Description

October 28, 2002
Vernon Township, located in the mountains of Sussex County, has grown from a town of farmsteads, mills, railroads, and schoolhouses to one of busy highways, lake communities, mountain resorts, and housing developments. Vernonís evolution from agriculture and industry to subdivisions and recreation, presented here in vivid historical photographs, will fascinate longtime residents, newcomers, and visitors alike. Vernon Township reveals a rare glimpse of the community in its early days. ÝÝFrom Ice Age mastodons to Colonial taverns to the Playboy Club Hotel, Vernon Township covers the vast sweep of the communityís rich and diverse heritage. This tour of Vernonís past includes antique images of homes, farms, stores, taverns, businesses, schools, churches, and industries. Also depicted are the evolution of local transportation from horse to train to automobile, notable past residents, and the growth of recreation from summer camps to fine hotels. Many of the unique historical views, some of which were reproduced from the original glass-plate negatives, have never before been published. ÝÝ

5.0 out of 5 stars A Local take, May 25, 2003
By
Dan O'Keefe (Vernon, New Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vernon Township (NJ) (Images of America) (Paperback)
I may be writing this because I'm a life long Vernon resident, or that I am very interested in history, but I highly recommend this book for everyone. It shows the slow transition of Anytown, USA: from small farming village, to large farming township, to the coming of the railroad, which brought on a massive mining buisness, and then the introduction of the automobile, which brought tourism: two ski resorts (Well, more like one and a half nowadays) and even a water park. This is a must read for North Jersey residents, and it makes and excellent coffee table book for the locals. This is the book for history buffs who prefer looking to reading.
