Review

“On the farm where everyone is mean to her, Veronica wastes away until each animal’s timid gesture of friendship puts her back on her feet. Grand in meaning and illustration.”—The New York Times Book Review

When I first discovered this book, I thought that it was a little harsh for my little boy, who was 2 1/2 when we first read it together. Veronica is a hippo who comes to live on Farmer Pumpkin's farm, and she is excited about her new home, but the farm animals reject her. She becomes despondent, too heartsick to leave her shed or even eat. The other animals even ponder whether she might die... and then they have a change of heart, begin to treat her kindly, and all become friends in the end. Even though this book has a happy ending, I worried about whether my son might be too young to understand the message or that he might be scared that Veronica might die. But I discovered that this book has been a nice tool to teach my boy about how to treat others. We have even reinacted the story with some of his plastic farm animals (and hippo). I can tell that he enjoys when the animals all become friends in the end.

Roger Duvoisin's VERONICA ON PETUNIA'S FARM tells of a large, happy hippo who can't wait to make friends in her new barnyard home. But the farm animals think she's strange and don't like her, and she hides from them until they all get to know each other. An engaging tale of friendship.

Roger Duvoisin's Veronica and Petunia are highly cherished classic characters, and for good reason. Veronica, transferred to Mr. Pumpkin's farm, sees that it's a lovely place, just right for a hippopotamus. She greets the many animals with a hearty `Good morning', but they turn their backs to her and gossip meanly, and refer to her as IT. Veronica becomes despondent and pines away in her house. Finally, one by one, the animals look in on her and bring her food. When Veronica ventures out, the animals rush up to greet her and say nice things about her; Veronica very graciously accepts their friendship, and is not mean spirited at all. A lovely story with a lovely lesson, and who could not be charmed by Duvoisin's endearing animal portraits.
