5.0 out of 5 stars a magnificent travel Bible, January 13, 2004
This review is from: Holy Bible New King James Version Compact Reference Bibles/Snap Flap (Black Binding) (Leather Bound)
I have never seen a better compact Bible than this one. Despite the small print, it is clear and readable; I set it side by side with six others of comparable size, and this was the only one that I could comfortably read.
The NKJV translation is superb, keeping much of the exquisite beauty of the original, but adding clarity in its use of modern day language.
Psalm 138:3
NKJV:
"In the day when I cried out, You answered me,
And made me bold with strength in my soul"
KJV:
"In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, and strengthenedst me with strength in my soul".

The words of Jesus are in red, it includes center-column references and translation notes, a 96 page concordance, and 9 maps. The pages are edged in gold, there is a ribbon marker, and the cover is bonded leather. What I especially like is the flap, that gives me just enough room to clip a pen on the inside, and goes over the cover to snap shut, protecting the pages from damage while in my purse.
The first Bible I ever purchased was published by Nelson, and after over twenty years of use is still in one piece; this edition seems to be constructed with a similar level of quality, so I have high hopes for its durability.
I'm not a "stuff and things" person, but this little Bible is something I own that I truly delight in, definitely qualifying as a Top Ten purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for, December 30, 2004
This review is from: Holy Bible New King James Version Compact Reference Bibles/Snap Flap (Black Binding) (Leather Bound)
I've gone through two of these Bibles (one with a snap flap, the other without) in 6 years. They last about 3 years each. The bonded leather cover simply does not last, even under optimal conditions. It breaks down and bleeds if it gets even slightly damp, cracks after flexing repeatedly (especially the snap flap version) and generally falls apart.

This is unfortunate, because the text itself is very well done. The pages are durable, don't stick together, and clearly readable. There's a useful concordance in the back, as well as references and indexed maps.

I am aware that this Bible is available in hardcover as well, and would recommend that you buy that instead if you want this edition at all. Anything will last longer than the leather bound version.

Instead of this edition, I would recommend an alternative. The Pocket Concord Reference Bible (Cambridge University Press, only KJV as far as I know) is of massively superior workmanship. If you want a small Bible, get that one instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars More Inferior Quality from Thomas Nelson, January 7, 2004
By
S Donahue (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Holy Bible New King James Version Compact Reference Bibles/Snap Flap (Black Binding) (Leather Bound)
The compact NKJV with Snap-Flap is a good, portable edition to carry around. However, in my opinion, Nelson Bibles are typically of very poor quality and durability---the Bibles are glue-bound instead of being sewn, and their life expectancy is limited. Again, in my opinion, snap-flap Bibles are a nuisance, with the flap hanging in your way as you handle the Bible when open. If you must have this edition, try it without the snap-flap.
