This review is from: New Version TrendyDigital WaterGuard Waterproof Case for Kindle 1, 2,3 (First, Second and Third Generation Kindle), and Kindle Fire Android Tablet, Blue Border (Electronics)
So, I was leaving for vacation and realized less than a week before that I had nothing to protect my Kindle 2 at the beach. After consulting the forums, I ordered the Quik Tek 9x12 Dry Pak, but wasn't thrilled that it was so much bigger than my Kindle. I saw the Trendy Digital waterproof case, but noticed that the website said that product wasn't shipping until April 20th (2 days after I left!). Just to be sure, I sent the company an email, just asking if they could let me know if the ship date moved up at all, since that was the cover I really wanted. First thing Monday morning, I received an email from Mark in customer service, saying that they had a handful of the product in an early shipment for product reviewers, but given that I was leaving the country before the ship date, they'd be happy to let me have one of those few! And they upgraded my shipping so I could be sure to get it on time! Now THAT'S customer service!
The cover right out of the package- it was shipped folded in half in a pouch, so there's a slight bend in the vinyl, which is now nearly gone, after a quick hit with a low-heat blowdryer and some weight on it overnight. The closure is a "double zip" (like a ziplock bag), which really is quadruple, since each "zipper" has two rows, and there are two sets. You then fold the zipped part down, and snap the outer closure together. Total time to close it took me about 15-20 seconds. The Kindle 2 fits snugly in the cover, with a clear screen for the screen/buttons, and a blue matte border. The page turn buttons and keyboard are easily accessible, and you can press them with no difficulty. The 5-way button is difficult to access, as it would be in any bag, but I did it a few times. I would suggest making sure you've selected the book and page you want to start from before putting it in the cover. There is some glare over the screen, but it's not distracting, and I can't imagine a way to make a cover like this glare-less without losing screen clarity. There is also an adjustable lanyard-type string that the whole case hangs from. I did the "paper towel test" (put a dry paper towel in the bag, seal it, then submerse the bag in water). Dry paper towel, so the watertightness seems very good. On vacation, I abused it pretty heavily- sand, wind, water, and my Kindle stayed dry and happy. There was a slight glare/shadow in very direct sun, but just changing the angle at which I held the Kindle resolved that. I did end up with some surface scratches to the cover- I'm guessing from ground-in sand, but the cover remained water tight, and the scratches did not cause enough of an issue to be particularly distracting. The page turn buttons were very accessible, I did find myself sliding the on/off switch through the cover a few times with a fingernail, and happy to say my laziness (not wanting to undo the snaps and zips) did not compromise the strength of the cover. The five-way navigation button was fairly unusable, which I fully expected, but since, for the most part, my book was already selected, it was a non-issue. In all, I'm very happy with this product, and incredibly impressed with Trendy Digital's customer service. I'm thrilled to be able to take this cover with me on vacation (and to the beach all summer!).

Am I not cool?,

This was by far one of the best purchases of my life. Yes, it is just basically a super solid ziplock bag, but I don't care. I read my Kindle why sitting in a pool drinking margs in Cabo San Lucas and you didn't. My girlfriend also could not stop making fun of me. I have no idea why the decided that this product needed a strap to wrap around your neck. What is the possible point of that? Looking like a bigger geek? It is bad enough that I have to remember to pack 24 different chargers every time I go on vacation for my Kindle, Laptop, Phone, DS, Ipod, etc. but now I am wearing a plastic Kindle protector around my neck? That is just a little much.
I don't have any fancy video to add (although I certainly watched that review pre-purchase and then demonstrated the same thing to any friends who would watch). The one slightly annoying thing is it is hard to slide the power button when the case is on... oh well, I was reading my kindle in a pool! How cool is that?!?!?! Why wouldn't you want to be reading your books while in a pool, pools are awesome.

I have used a book cover for K2 from trendydigital and like its design very much. So, I went ahead to get this waterproof case from them and used in my recent trip. I am quite pleased with how the case serves its purpose. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to bring the Kindle to the beach. The case has a very simple, yet effective design to function as a waterproof case. Getting the Kindle into the case, you simply unsnap the two snaps at the top and open the two rows of closure (similar to heavy duty zip lock type). Once the kindle is inside, you seal the closure and snap. It is sealed securely. The whole thing is simple and straightforward. While inside the case, the Kindle remains fully readable and all the side buttons and keyboard are fully functional. The five-way stick is less accessible, which I expected in this waterproof environment. I tested the waterproof feature on the case and it work fine. The contents inside the case are all dry my test. In all, I think this case is simple, yet elegant solution for using the kindle in a beach trip or bathtub reading. It is one for my favor accessories for K2.

Disappointed,

In preparation for an upcoming beach vacation, I ordered the Waterguard Waterproof case for my Kindle 2 (TD019). I ordered it on 6/27 and it arrived 7/1. It came with no instructions, but a youtube video showed its use well. The pouch is nice looking and my Kindle 2 fit perfectly. It also fits (although snugly) with the Amazon case on the Kindle. In great excitement, I immediately tested it by submerging it in a sink filled with water and a piece of towel paper inside. Not only did the paper get wet, the pouch filled with water! I tested it multiple times, with the same result. Very disappointing and quite surprising!! I am in the process of requesting my $20.24 ($14.49 for the case and $5.75 s/h) returned.

bought this cover to allow the use of my Kindle in the bath .I enjoy extended baths and love reading whilst soaking. This W/Proof enclosure does the job well the only draw back is the on/off switching is a bit difficult. It looks like this enclosure would even work underwater.

I just received the product and haven't used it outdoors yet, but it seems to be just as represented on the Amazon website. It looks quite up to the task of protecting the Kindle on the beach or poolside, or for taking on a boat or a potentially rainy hike.
That having been said, it could easily be made better by a) slimming it down a little so it's a neater fit on the Kindle b) having a window only on the front, with the textured blue plastic all across the back. Two other problems are much harder to address with a case of this type: the Kindle cannot be turned on or off without opening the bag (a real problem because the Kindle turns itself off automatically if unused for a while, e.g. when you go for a swim) and the "joystick" is nearly impossible to manipulate through the heavy plastic. I suppose we'll be seeing a hard case which addresses these functional issues in the near future, but not at this price point. But at this point it seems to be the only game in town (other than a Ziplock bag, which is a real option) and I'm willing to put up with the negatives to protect a $350 investment from water damage. Let's see if it scratches or yellows as the summer goes by.

This was my upgrade from a ziploc bag for Kindle in-the-bath reading safety. The product is essentially a high-spec ziploc bag itself, but I have no concerns about its construction or ability to resist water. The case is a thick polythene bag with a double ziplock which folds down and is held in place by a fold-over flap which fastens with a couple of snappers. Bear in mind that it's not Kindle armor and it doesn't give you a license to use your device as a dive knife! I imagine something hard or sharp would cut through it pretty easily.
The Kindle is perfectly readable inside. Water slides right off the surface and it doesn't steam up or suffer from condensation (unless maybe you take damn cold baths!). I wish that the bag was a snugger fit, because the kindle slides about inside a little bit but not so you can't live with it. The only caveat is that it is awkward to operate the Kindle's on-off slider and the main navigation joystick. Both of those controls require you to push sideways on them rather than straight down, and you have to dig into the plastic and stretch it a little to achieve that, which might cause a tear with repetition. I'll see how long this one lasts but I'd definitely recommend one to anyone looking to waterproof their Kindle.

Some people have mentioned this is not completely waterproof - true, this would not be the case to use if you want to read underwater :) - but for protection while lounging at the beach/pool, this works great to keep out sand and water. I also like the added protection when I'm in situations where something could spill on Kindle, such as eating, reading on a plane, etc.
I have the Amazon Kindle Leather Cover, which I don't remove. I just open the cover (fold it back), and slip Kindle into the waterproof case; it fits perfectly. I assume people who mention that this plastic case is too large are using the Kindle without a cover. I can read easily through the waterproof case (occasionally some glare), and can easily turn pages. The scroll bar is a little more difficult, but it's not hard to slip Kindle out, if necessary. The waterproof case did start to split down one side just a little after several months of constant use, so I'm on my second case now.

I LOVE my Kindle and it goes everywhere with me. I also LOVE the beach, long bubble baths, and floating in the pool....so Kindle REALLY needed a "bathing suit" to join me. This worked GREAT for a couple weeks last summer. Yes, there are complaints about it being hard to turn on and off in the case, etc., but as long as Kindle was safe from water splashed by my kids, steam from my bubbles, and sand from the beach I was happy. I didn't even worry about the possibility of dropping it in water, because I did the paper towel test and it worked. (put a dry paper towel in the case and submerged it in water...paper towel came out dry!). Would have given this 5 stars the first week I used it.
However, at some point during the first couple weeks of use, the seam along the side came undone. Thanks goodness I noticed before something horrible (like falling in the pool) happened because with the seam split, it would have filled up with water and drown my Kindle. I still use it for protection around sand and water, but now I am extra careful knowing that it is no longer waterproof (no accidents allowed now!). It helps for splashes and protection from sand, but I won't be floating in the pool next summer with it! I wish someone would come up with a better product for protection for active Kindles like mine!

What a worthless piece of junk. I now have a nice paperweight instead of a Kindle. The side of the bag ripped out and water entered. My kindle ran until its battery gave up the ghost and now the little trooper won't charge.
All I wanted to do was read my kindle in the hot tub. This thing won't even keep a sandwhich safe. Save your money and buy a ziploc bag. You'll be able to use the buttons and have 1000 new bags for the price of this thing. |
