David Pritchard's newest album is an indication that the soul of the modern jazz musician has not been buried under an avalanche of mainstream pop culture and nostalgia for the jazz of yesteryear. This is beautifully crafted music, intelligently conceived and arranged and clearly recorded. The playing is complex and accurate yet warm and alluring. The effect is to take the listener on a journey of atmospheres, of places sensed in the past but never visited. This is the rarest of art forms in 2010 in that it is new. It is not re-hashed anything. This has come from a place of quiet listening for the voice that has not shown itself before now. This place he has taken us is the reason jazz was born in the first place and absolutely the reason I still believe in the genre. David Pritchard is a national treasure.
