The Department of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong has just completed the production of a new CD-ROM for architects. This CD-ROM essentially outlines some of the fundamentals of elevator planning, and provides a software for developing schematic layouts (how many lifts? what size? what speed?).

The starting point for this project was a thorough study of George Strakosch's book: "Vertical Transportation". It is a comprehensive text which is readily understood and applied by architects and architecture students. Every Architecture program should have a copy of this book in their library, and make sure that its essential points are covered in courses which address Building Systems.

I would also recommend "CIBSE Guide D: Transportation systems in buildings".

George Strakosch wrote the definitive book on the nature of elevators; what they are, how they work, and how to apply them to serving vertical transportation needs in all types of buildings. As an Otis Elevator management trainee in the 70's, this book was required reading. Today, the book is dated only because it's missing the high-tech topics of computerized elevator controls. Otherwise, this is the book for anyone wanting a solid foundation in understanding the operations and layout of elevators and escalators
