Innovative ambient-guitar-rock, September 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Vertigo (Audio CD)
"Vertigo" contains some remixes by other experimental guitar-rock and ambient groups. The results are hit-and-miss, but several good tracks with a strong rhythmic backing and a dark atmosphere. My absolute favourite is the "Elementary..remix" from Main, this is one of the best tracks either artist has recorded. You should listen to this track with good headphones or a Dolby Surround System to obtain maximum effect. If some tracks hadn't been so lengthy, I would have rated this record with 5 stars.

whoosh & drone & beats..., August 23, 1998
By A Customer

Essentially this is a collection of remixes of songs from Bowery Electric's excellent album 'Beat'. Beautiful sonic reconstructions from the likes of Witchman, Third Eye Foundation, and Twisted Science build on Bowery's whoosh & drone & beats sound. My only complaint is that they could have included more on Disc I, but this is still a wonderful release.

Experimental electronica doesn't hold your hand..., May 22, 2003
This review is from: Vertigo (Audio CD)
These remixes are great. Starting with the best album track off of Beat (Fear of Flying), you get to hear two very cool remixes of that track on disc 1, and on disc 2 there are a host of other tunes remixed to sound nothing like their originals. In other words, just what a good remix album sounds like. I don't know why people don't like this cd; I can only guess that because it sounds quite different than Bowery Electric at (many) times, the fans were expecting something else. Well, what you get is artcore electronica in the vein of Autechre and other techno artists who don't make particularly danceable music (that's debatable, of course), but do make for fascinating listening. So, to reiterate, what we've got here is excellent noise (a much more inclusive term than music), and I don't see why anyone shouldn't enjoy it, except that they must've come to the party with pre-conceived notions about it sounding more like Bowery Electric (you know, slow, mellow, little dynamics or development, but really cool, of course). If you're a fan of BE, you owe it to yourself to check this out. Just be warned...

Mixed, but generally misses what makes them so good, August 7, 2002
This review is from: Vertigo (Audio CD)
These remixes are a mixed bag, and overall, a disappointment to those like me who rate Bowery Electric at the height of their genre (much better than, say, Massive Attack) for their uncanny intuitive spot-on ability to find perfect real (almost hybrid sexual and meditative) grooves. "Lushlife" and "Beat" are also exemplary in their consistency. These tracks vary in quality. Some take those grooves and add on what really is so annoying about most others in the field, namely the typical pitfalls of drum and bass: loud artificial drum machines and casio-like atmospherics. The first three tracks of the second disc are guilty of this. At the same time, the last three tracks of the same disc fit in perfectly to any Bowery Electric outing. If you're a fan of the genre in general, this is a nice double-cd to pick up. There are enough interesting moments and a few wonderful tracks to make the modest price well worth it. Would I put this on when I have company? Never. Definitely not in the same class as "Lushlife" or "Beat." Would I add some of the tracks to mixes? You bet.
