5.0 out of 5 stars over and over, May 18, 2010
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 30 (Audio CD)
I copied this album from a professor's collection while house-sitting one night in college. I've listened to it through dozens of times since. Listen to it in your car while driving through the city at night with your love (or alone, I've done that too, more often). This is classy, flawless music -- any imperfections in the playing are there by design, or welcomed like the peculiarities in the movement of smoke. This music is a way to breathe calmly, wisely amidst a violent world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Place To Begin, July 31, 2006
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 30 (Audio CD)
Wow! A really good overview of Prez. For anyone first investigating this sax great I couldn't think of anyplace better to get started.

I discovered Lester Young by way of reading John Harvey an English mystery writer whose main character is a jazz afficianado. I think it's a great way to expose yourself to new things by paying attention to the favorites of people you admire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, accessible collection, August 28, 2009
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 30 (Audio CD)
I have always loved the saxophone and worked my way back into Lester Young's music from John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. There is something sped up about both Coltrane and Parker that you don't find in Lester. Lester was cool, laid back, soulful. This collection captures that side of him well. I don't believe it's chronological or inclusive of all of Lester's periods (because he had many and he played differently in each) and there are no Billie Holiday companion pieces but you can't go wrong with this beautiful music.
