5.0 out of 5 stars Tom Jobim's VJM 13 deserves more than 5, October 2, 1998

Jobim's Verve Jazz Masters is probably the most beautiful and deep-hearted album of the entire Verve Jazz Master collection. A very lovely music, extremelly well played by Jobim with people like Luis Bonfa, Stan Getz, and Astrud Gilberto, that makes our souls happy for one our, and probably the rest of the day.

Astrud Gilberto sings so softly and sweetly in Corcovado that the listener feels that something is making ripples in his/her chest. Stan Getz plays a counterpart tenor-sax to Jobim's deep vocals in "So Danco Samba" and Elis Regina makes the same with him in Aguas De Marco.

If you don't buy it as soon as possible, then you are missing the BEST chance to listen to the greatest Brazilian composer of all time at his BEST moment: The Bossanova explosion of the 60's, if Jobim had a low moment after that.

Which one is the best song of this brilliant CD? I bought the album two years ago and I still don't know. The entire album is just the most wonderful love song (One Hour Song, Man!). It's a shame that the rate only reachs five stars. This album deserves 10.

I can't say anything but: "brother, sister, buy it. You don't know what you are missing".

Fascinating rhythym, Oh Won't you stop thinkin' bout me...

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful album, August 24, 2001
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 13 (Audio CD)
Words aren't enough to describe this album. It's an album that is an experience. Each and every song affects the emotions and soul. There are instrumentals as well as vocals, making this a great album with a mix of different Jobim styles. There's even a Gershwin tune thrown in for good measure, the only non-Jobim song on here. The booklet contains informative liner notes about Jobim, as well as notes on a few of the songs. This is a must-have for Jobim and/or bossa nova fans.

great compliation of Jobim music on Verve Records label. Every song is a winner (with the possible exception of "Fascinatin' Rhythm", which is a song I associate with Fred Astaire and is not really bossanova). For a pretty good overview you should also get the Verve compilation releases of Astrid Gilberto and Stan Getz and you'll be set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homage to a Brazilian poet!, December 12, 2005
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 13 (Audio CD)
This album is a true parade of the best themes of this inspired composer. Through a set of well known artists such as Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz, we will enjoy the lovable candor and warmth of this legendary figure of the Brazilian song.
There is not minor track. Each one to its own possesses the magic flame of that kaleidoscopic land of myths and legends.

Corcovado, Agua de beber, Aguas de Marco, Insensatez, Favela, So danco samba are by far, the most attractive titles. A winner album wherever you analyze it. Go for this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth music, April 13, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 13 (Audio CD)
Before "Smooth Jazz" there was smooth music. There is a difference. Smooth Jazz is the commercial breakthrough by artists into the business of putting out there work. I'm not knocking it, it's business. Smooth [mellow] music, was never considered a genre, but the rather a music which rendered a mellow feeling. Buttery, succulent, soft like the human touch. Antonio Carlos Jobim's work is smooth like that. His vibe is very mellow, full of LOVE. Very sensative, lush, rich and earthy. Check out the sound bite's and hear for yourself. Of course...the Verve label is a qualifying endorsment in itself. I certainly enjoy this release.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, November 26, 2000

When I first heard the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, I fell in love with it. He is possibly the greatest composer of the century. His music is simply incredible. Anyone that does not own this CD should run out and get it immediately, along with his other CDs. My favorite songs are "Triste," "Inutil Paisagem," and "Agua De Beber," but they're ALL good, I promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars the most amazing music ever, July 17, 2001

I saw Black Orpheus years ago and fell in love with the soundtrack. Now I have music similar to the soundtrack on this CD and I can just let it repeat itself for hours. It's so smoothly sensual that you won't ever want it to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jobim's jewels, March 20, 2011
This review is from: Verve Jazz Masters 13 (Audio CD)
If you're a Jobim fan, this is a must-own CD. Great selection of Jobim tunes, sung by Tom and Elis and Astrud. Astrud Gilberto, by the way, was the wife of Joao Gilberto, another central figure in Bossa Nova and a very close friend of Tom. Astrud started her musical career singing Tom's songs--notably "The Girl from Ipanema". That was shortly before her divorce from Joao and her affair with Stan Getz, which led to Getz's "retirement" from Bossa Nova.

But Getz captured the wistful, sensual nature of Bossa Nova perfectly. Tom's deceptively simple melodies luring you into a mood that is sad or whimsical or ecstatic. Fine musicianship from everyone on this album, Elis Regina's fine voice on display on the whimsical "Aguas de Marco" (Waters of March), among others. Regina was a child prodigy who was performing professionally at the age of 12 and was dead at 36 of a drug overdose. She was in her teens when she started working with Tom, and she was soon the most popular singer in Brazil.

Tom's piano playing, simple but so smoothly elegant, Getz's sensuous sax, Elis Regina...I have fallen in love with this album many times. Maybe you will too.
