with the relatively inexpensive remasters, why bother?,

This review is from: Very Best Of 2 (Audio CD)
This was clearly intended to supplement the first 'Very Best of', which was heavy on the records of Supertramp during their prime - 'Crime of the Century' (1974), 'Crisis? What Crisis?' (1975), 'Even in the Quietest Moment' (1977), 'Breakfast in America' (1979), and 'Famouse Last Words' (1982) (i.e., there is only one track on each volume from outside this era). Whereas Volume 1 was full of AOR radio hits (and thus, heavy on material from 'Crime' and 'Breakfast'), this collection rounds out with fan favorites from the other three of these records. Therefore, my advice is this: if you are a casual fan, keep Volume 1 and do not both with this relativley expensive supplement. If you are more than causually interested, don't lay out $40.00 for Volumes 1 and 2 when you can basically have all five records in their original running order for a little bit more.

supertramp the ROCK band blended with a easy going pop sensation that set pulses racin' in the seventies they had everything that made a rock band palsable...they had great songs fantastic melodies they could be violent if need be...
plus supertramp had everythin' too look like a proper rock band and be taken seriously by the critics the long hair the beards what more to tell than a fantastic band i've heard some other reviewers state that this is just a suppliment too the first super best of 1 and this is just an collection for completists well hello i'm a novice too supertramps music and i found this disc highly entertaining from the opening track "lady" too 14 "free as a bird" also on track 13 you get a 10 51 seconds minute epic in the shape of "fools overture" a classic band a great second best of..

Compliments and suppliments Volume 1,

Volume 1 was dominated by tracks from Crime and Breakfast, Volume 2 meanwhile is dominated by tracks from Even in the Quietest Moments and Famous Last Words. It features more selections from Crisis, but this album remains underrepresented between the two Volumes - why not Sister Moonshine or Another Man's Woman?. Volume 2 features more selections from Breakfast, yet another from Crime and a token track from Free As A Bird.Volume 2 certainly does feature stuff that should have been put on Vol1 in place of other tracks, so it would be wrong to say that Vol2 is merely the 'B' material, but all in all, Volume 1 is the better mix as one would expect. So if you buy only one volume, buy that one. That said, volume 2 is worth getting. But at this rate you may as well just get the albums and make your own best of mixes on tape or MD.

The last reviewer needs mental help, Supertramp are legends!,
This review is from: Very Best Of 2 (Audio CD)
He said these guys are in the cut-out bin(chuckles). They are not there, they still sell records but not as much as they did in their hey-day but reasonable enough to keep albums in print. Supertramp are still popular in Europe and Canada whilst most of America got brain-washed by those losers at MTV who wanted to show pretty boys who turned out to be pitchers for the other team and women who look like prostitutes showing T and A to sell records. Supertramp sold records on MUSIC and not looks! This second best of was released because they had so many good songs that didn't fit on Best of 1 like Babaji, Fools Overture, Waiting So Long, My Kind of Lady and so much more. Buy now!

As other critics have written, Vol.2 beckens the question of was this trip really necessary? It feels like it has this self conscience need to justify itself, especially with non-hit tracks from "Final Last Words". "Waiting So Long" is highly uninteresting. "Don't Leave Me Now" is passionate, but the most interesting stuff doesn't happen till the end. "My Kind Of Lady" is a pleseant shuffle number, but hardly a must-have. If one were looking for reasons to get it, it would only to find some of the older and still worthy material in one CD. "Just Another Nervous Wreck" and Oh Darling" from Breakfast In America are gems, "If Everyone Was Listening" from Crimes... and "A Soapbox Opera" from Crisis? What Crisis? are all strong tracks. But instead of searching for this imported collection, you should have Crime Of The Century and Breakfast In America. They have most of the hits and are outstanding complete albums.

The second Supertramp best of entitled The Very Best of Supertramp Volume 2 was released in most countries (save the US) in 1992.
Following the success of the first Very Best of Supertramp compilation, it was only fitting that a second volume would eventually be released. Unlike the first volume (which has the same cover but with white background and featured all of the band's biggest hit singles and key album tracks), this second volume of The Very Best of Supertramp contains the tracks that were left off the first volume due to time constraints and were mainly album tracks (only two of the tracks here were released as singles) and most of these tracks are all now on the 2005 compilation Retrospectacle (except as noted). "If Everyone Was Listening" (which does not appear on Retrospectacle) is the only track from 1974's Crime of the Century on The Very Best of Supertramp Volume 2 (luckily "Asylum" was not on either of the compilations, if it were included then why bother owning Crime of the Century). The brilliant "A Soapbox Opera" (which does not appear on Retrospectacle) and the minor UK hit single "Lady" represent 1975's Crisis? What Crisis?. 1977's Even in the Quietest Moments is represented by its sublime title cut, the excellent "Downstream", the superb "Babaji" (also not on Retrospectacle) and the best song they ever did, the masterpiece "Fool's Overture" (sacriligeously left off of Retrospectacle). We then have "Gone Hollywood", the excellent "Oh Darling" and the classic album track "Just Another Nervous Wreck" (which is conspicuously absent from Retrospectacle) all representing 1979's Breakfast in America (if "Child of Vision" was included in the compilations, one would not need Breakfast in America). 1982's Famous Last Words is represented by the US Top 40 hit "My Kind of Lady", the superb "Waiting So Long" (which was not on Retrospectacle) and the epic "Don't Leave Me Now". Lastly, 1987's disappointing Free as a Bird is represented by its title cut. If you don't know where to start on Supertramp, this 15 song best of (and its Volume 1 counterpart) are your best bet but if you either already have the albums or choose to by Retrospectacle then don't bother. I say buy this and Volume 1 (as I'm not a fan of the post-1987 material). RECOMMENDED! |
