Let's Get This Straight....,

Time to get this straight.... This review is for the 15 track compilation CD on the Jungle/Caroline/Cult label; NOT the 12 track CD on the Planet label with the same name. Due to a database mix-up, most of the reviews that follow this one are for the Planet label CD.This CD, "The Very Best of The Archies", is somewhat inaccurate in its title, but a good CD overall. While it does contain some of The Archies biggest hits, including "Sugar, Sugar," other singles such as "Sunshine" and "Who's Your Baby?" are noticeably absent. In fact, 8 of the tracks are from the original "Everything's Archie" album, with the remainder being popular tracks from their other albums. What makes this compilation special, however, are the two "Sugar, Sugar" remixes. Both the "Pistel Remix '99" and the "Julian Beeston Remix '99" are here, and the results are tracks that would be welcome on present day Top 40 radio; very upbeat and very danceable. In fact, a friend of mine, who is not really into the Archies and gives me strange looks whenever I play them, really likes the "Pistel Remix" and actually requests it to be played. Overall, this 15 track CD compilaton, while not a TRUE "Best Of" package in my opinion, contains some great work from the group, and is a "Must Have" for true Archies fans just for the two "Sugar, Sugar" remixes. Anyone who purchases the CD will not be disappointed.

BUBBLE BUBBLE, GUM AND FUN!,

This review is from: Very Best of Archies (Audio CD)
Popular music would have been so much poorer without the occasional bubblegum hit! I cannot imagine a childhood devoid of the fluffy pop of The Archies' Sugar Sugar! It appears on this album in no less than three versions, two of them being 99 remixes. The other tracks are of the same ilk, sweet nonsense songs about those things that matter when you're a teenager, with a very innocent 60s flavour. I remember another Archies hit from 1971 that's omitted here, though - A Summer Prayer For Peace. It was a bit more serous than any of the candyfloss here. But get this if you want to relive your youth!
