I bought and read this book. It's very useful for finding out what the Brits mean. I never knew there was so much slang and differences before I moved to the UK. Yes, the Brits REALLY do say bloody a lot. What you don't know is there are several every day terms that they use and hundreds of other terms that come up from time to time, too that the average American wouldn't...

You must buy this book! Why? Because you will find out things you never knew, like that in Britain, "puke" means to vomit. "Piece of cake" means easy, "posh" means high class, "put a sock in it" means shut-up. This book is littered with words and phrases that mean exactly the same thing in both American and British English. I e-mailed the author, who responded politely,...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to English for Americans, January 23, 2003
This review is from: The Very Best of British (Paperback)
If you are American and are visiting the UK, or want to understand your Brit colleagues, then you have to read this. All those mysterious words explained. Your Brit employees can no longer "diss" you without you knowing it. A superb investment for the management.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and very useful, January 11, 2003
This review is from: The Very Best of British (Paperback)
I picked this book up at the airport on the way back to the US and giggled all the way home (much to the amusement of my fellow passengers). I found the companion website useful too - it is updated fairly regularly.

Since returning home I have kept the book near the TV as it is really useful when watching all those British shows that seem to have hit our screens recently.

Well worth a read.

I picked this book up at the airport and have since read the companion website too - which is updated regularly it seems. Apart from the fact that I sniggered all the way back to the US on the airplane, I have found the book extremely useful - particulary when watching those British shows that seem to have hit our screens recently.
Definitely worth a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep this little book next to your television, March 16, 2002

This review is from: The Very Best of British (Paperback)
I bought this little book to help me understand some of the slang that bubbles through the British mini-series, "Queer as Folk." ("Snogging" is kissing; "Sod off" is the equivalent of "Get lost"; "Cor" is a mild exclamation, a shortened form of "God blind me.") Since not every British movie available on DVD is captioned for the deaf, you may want this little volume close at hand when you rent "Trainspotting," "Snatch," "The Full Monty," and other contemporary fast-talking comedies.

Written in a very informal style(by a Brit who lived in Texas for two years) and peppered with cartoons, this volume is divided into seven little chapters: one on general slang and chapters on food and drink, clothing, motoring, people (a "punter" is a customer...or a better, as in the movie "Croupier"), household items, and odds and sods (miscellany). Treat yourself to a copy of this amusing book. Keep it by the telly, mute the commercials, and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and informative, March 13, 2003
This review is from: The Very Best of British (Paperback)
This book was a very fun read - I read it straight through, although it can also be used as a reference book, to look up the meaning of particular words and phrases. The terms were organized into chapters by subject, and also indexed alphabetically in the back of the book, making it easy to find what you are looking for. I had no idea that there were so many differences between British and American English. This book has been helpful to me in understanding some British tv shows that I watch, and it really impresses my boyfriend (a Brit) that I understand just about everything he says.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative, September 28, 2005

An easy readable reference for all Americans visiting the British Isles. I lend mine to all US vistors. Just wish there was a reversed version.

This book is littered with words and phrases that mean exactly the same thing in both American and British English. I e-mailed the author, who responded politely, but basically said the book is just fine as it is. The book is useful for reference and enjoyable for browsing, but is flawed by its inclusion of entries that do not belong. I guess the author just added some unnecessary words to pad the list out to 1000 entries.

I was very pleased with how fast this item arrived, and am very pleased with how it is written. If you plan to travel to England, or just want to learn their language this book is a must! I can not give it enough stars.
