This review is from: The Very Best Of Buck Owens, Vol.1 (Audio CD)
He was responsible for creating what is known as the "Bakersfield Sound." He placed a total of 90 songs on the Billboard Top Country Singles charts over a span of three decades. He was the co-host of the popular TV series "Hee-Haw" for close to 20 years. And he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997. Buck Owens has done it all and Rhino has chosen to present his very best work on 2 seperate CD's."The Very Best of Buck Owens Vol. 1" contains 16 of the artists greatest songs. It is difficult to comprehend just how big a star Buck Owens was in the 1960's. Of the 16 tunes presented in this collection 10 were number one hits and 5 more peaked at number two. What is most remarkable however is that many of these tunes remained on Billboards Top Country Singles chart for five or six months. He was truly a dominant figure at that time. And with good reason. I would have have to say that this well conceived collection is one of the best I have ever seen from Rhino. There is a nifty 12 page booklet that includes a four page biography of the man as well as notes from Buck Owens himself on each of the 16 songs included here. While I enjoyed each and every one of these tracks my favorites are songs popular in the mid-sixties including "It Takes People Like You (To Make People Like Me), "Waitin' In Your Welfare Line" and my all-time favorite Buck Owens hit record "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail." I also enjoyed the great banjo work on the final cut on this CD "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms". The remastering job on this disc is absolutely first rate and just to allay any fears these are all the original Capitol recordings. I was so impressed with this collection that I am seriously considering ordering Volume 2. This collection is an absolute must for any fan of classic country music!!

I don't like country music. That said, I really like this album. Buck was a real presence and the "freight train guitar" style he utilized makes all the difference. One doesn't often remember that before HeeHaw Buck was really ( I mean REALLY) big! Now I know why. Most of his early (and best) hits are on this album and the vocalizations with Don Rich are worth far more than this collection costs. The audio quality is among the best I've ever heard on disc.

Buck Owens was a titan in the music industry, not just in the 1960s, but throughout the decades after that as well. True, the songs on this CD were recorded between 1959 and 1971; but because of Buck's incredible success most true country music aficionados always remembered Buck as being the best of the best. Heck, I don't even go in for country music--but this CD I had to run out and buy after listening to the sound bytes here on Amazon!
My favorite tune on this CD is the first track, "Under Your Spell Again." Like they all say, Buck did infuse his brand of country music with a rock and roll flavor that helped him make his mark. The music here truly is exhilarating, thrilling, and very memorable. I also like the booklet that comes with the CD--there is an essay by Rich Kienzle; and some input from the artist himself! A fine booklet indeed! SMILE Back up vocals are provided by The Jordanaires. I would recommend this CD if you don't know about Buck's work but like the sound clips here, as I did, and then decide you want to introduce yourself to Buck's artistry. If you REALLY like this CD; then get the CD of Buck's Greatest Hits, volume two, which is also put out on the Rhino label. There is a volume three as well. As I said before, I don't even like country music--but this material is so darn good you'll like it just as much as I did! It's a very easy listen with great musical arrangements and the sound quality is excellent. I'll probably love volume two of Buck's hits every bit as much as I love this CD. I highly recommend this CD for people who are just beginning to get acquainted with Buck's work. Fans of country music will enjoy this as well. You rule, Buck!

THIS IS BUCK OWENS AT HIS VERY BEST,

THESE SONGS OF BUCK AND DON RICH ARE PURE HONKY-TONK SOUNDS. I HAVE LISTENED TO THESE SONGS AND OTHERS BEFORE AND DURING MY NAVY CARER. THIS WAS BEFORE HEE HAW AND THE START OF THE BAKERSFIELD SOUND. SONGS LIKE THESE COULD PACK A CONCERT OR A NIGHT CLUB IN TULSA, OKLA. I HAVE MANY ALBUNS OF BUCK OWENS BUT IAM GOING TO REPLACE THEM WITH ALL NEW CDS. WHEN DON RICH WAS TAKEN AWAY SUDDENLY THE MUSIC OF BUCK OWENS WAS SOME HOW NOT THE SAME. THANKS A LOT FROM THIS BUCKERSFIELD FAN.

For all of his apparent understanding of the appeal of rock and roll, Buck Owens was shamelessly a hillbilly singer and few, if any, surpassed him in his long career. The Beatles (Ringo Starr) and Ray Charles made cover versions of his songs. Buck and Don Rich made some masterful recordings before Don's untimely death. I believe the best of them are in this package. My first recollection of Buck Owens, actually some three years after his recording career started, is of a young cowboy type wailing along with Buck on an outdoor jukebox to "Save the Last Dance For Me", a hit for the Ben E. King-led Drifters. (The song is on another BO compilation). It was not a good introduction to Buck Owens for me, but as time passed, through the very songs in this compilation, I became a big Buck Owens fan. You will too unless you are anti-country because Buck is right in your face with his distinctive country sound. My favorite is "Tall Dark Stranger". Recommended.

This review is from: The Very Best Of Buck Owens, Vol.1 (Audio CD)
This is the first of two volumes of Buck's greatest hits. Together, they include all Buck's number one country hits and almost all of his other top five country hits but many good songs are omitted.
This set includes Act naturally (which was covered by the Beatles), Together again (recorded by many country singers including Emmylou), I've got a tiger by the tail and many others. Buck wrote many of his own songs but was occasionally successful with covers. On this collection, you can find his version of the bluegrass classic, Rolling in my sweet baby's arms. This volume and its companion contain the essential Buck Owens solo tracks but many great songs are omitted. Rhino also released a 3-CD boxed set containing 62 songs including hit duets with Dwight Yoakam, Rose Maddox and Susan Raye. If you can afford it, I recommend that instead of the two single CD's.

What can be said about Buck Owens that hasn't already been said? He is one of the legends of Country Music, his sound, the "Bakersfield Sound" still is a major influence in Country Music and his songs are standards today. So here they are again, a musical and nostalgic journey to the 1960's and 70's, when Buck Owens and the Buckaroos were on top, having one #1 record after the other.I think this compilation will mostly be of interest for those who are not really into Country Music, but still want to have a few landmark albums in their collection. This is the chance to add some awesome music to a collection. Of course there is nothing new for the real country collector, but it'as good to see that this great music will never die! |
