5.0 out of 5 stars The rightful queen of World Music
Okay, that's a subjective opinion, and I'll probably change and name somebody else as queen of world music someday...I'm fickle that way.

However, Cesaria Evora is one of the most distinguished and worthy singers of world music around. She centers often on the Cape Verdean sound, but there is much of Brazil and of Portugal roots here. The variety represented here...

2.0 out of 5 stars Cesaria Fans Stay away as far as you can
I am giving 2 stars only because I immensely adore Cesaria Evora.
Magical voice, terrible compilation.
Normally you buy very best albums because you don't want to pay top dollars for regular albums that have 2-3 good songs with filler for rest. This time it is the opposite. This compilation has only 2 of her best songs, the rest is so-so.
You will be...

You will be much better off if you buy her regular albums such as:
São Vicente
Cafe Atlantico
which are highly recommended.
This said Cesaria Evora must be part of your life experience.

Imagine the Very Best of Beatles without Yesterday.

P.S. Just in case you are wondering which ones are the 2 songs worthy of a CD with a name Very Best, here they are:
03. Carnaval De Sao Vicente
13. Esperance Irisada

I don't always recommend "Best Of" albums highly, but this is truly a terrific introduction to a woman who not only masters each style she sings, but obviously is loving every moment of it, and her enthusiasm for what she's singing is contagious.

You don't get the lyrics in the program notes of a "Best Of" album, and I personally don't believe understanding the lyrics is that important to the enjoyment of the lady's singing.

Most highly recommended.

Good music, indeed, but be careful. I would recommed her "Anthologie: Mornas & Coladeras" (double CD) better.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Best Of, April 28, 2004
This review is from: The Very Best of Cesaria Evora (Audio CD)
This compilation is very lively and danceable, it mainly reflects the latest works of Cesaria Evora (Cafe Atlantico and S. Vicente di Longe), which are lighter and sweeter that the earlier ones. But what I like best about this CD is the inedited song Fidjo Maguado, a really amazing morna by Jorge Monteiro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, July 27, 2005

This compilation of Cesaria's songs brings many successes of her most famous CD's, such as Cafe Atlantico. Her voice is just amazing and with the rythmin makes you feel as if you were on one of those beaches of Cape Verde. This is more than recommended, specially for the ones that are planning to buy the first CD of this singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures your sentiments and won't let go, December 7, 2004
This review is from: The Very Best of Cesaria Evora (Audio CD)
This is exactly what I'm lookig for in music: Artists little known in the U.S. that I have the priviledge to "Discover" for my own! There is music beyond our borders that is breathtaking and sensual and exotically moving. Please break through the barrier of the good music your used to and travel - through music - to places and times that will inspire you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sodade, August 5, 2004
This review is from: The Very Best of Cesaria Evora (Audio CD)
Oh how I love Cesaria! As always when I visit Barnes & Nobles I go to the International music section. As my eyes scanned the wide selection of world music, Cesaria's face stood out. This woman reminds of Celia Cruz -love her too, may her soul rest in peace -I said to myself and I bet she's a wonderful singer. All I needed to hear was the song "Sodade" and that was it. I fell in love with Cesaria's music. Like Celia Cruz she has the voice that captures your attention and sends chills down your spine - so electrifying it's beautiful! I currently one three of Cesaria's albums - THe Very Best of, Cabo Verde, and Voz D'Amor! THe next albums I want to get are Sao Vincente di Longe and Cesaria!
For the past few months I've been listening to Cesaria's music more than anyone elses! I can relate so much to the lyrics of her music and the style being that I'm from the Caribbean. I feel as if I've also lived the Capeverdian experience! I would like to visit someday! Viva Cesaria a reina da morna!

Cesaria delivers, conquers, enchants... she's just inspiring. If anything comes aout of this CD is the realization that you must hear her live. For for the unfortunate of us who have not had such opportunity, this compilation is a wonderful way of getting to know great singing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I first heard Ms. Evora on Link TV - so I bought this cd, August 25, 2007

This review is from: The Very Best of Cesaria Evora (Audio CD)
The first song I ever heard from this woman was "Angola", a video played on Link TV. I knew then I had to buy this music. Before I did, however, I downloaded a few samples which convinced me to buy.

I bought this cd never knowing how long her career spanned. I just knew I loved the song "Angola", which is more folk song than anything else (perfectly captures a community in celebration).

I think it's a worthy buy and recommend you buy this before you choose to buy anything else.
