4.0 out of 5 stars Could've been better, May 10, 2005

Makaveli96 (Torrance, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Very Best of Death Row (Audio CD)
Most of the tracks on here are classics but a few of them are weird choices. Against All Odds is an okay song but it's definitely not of one Death Row's greatest tracks. It should've been replaced with 2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted. I think Suge chose this one just because Tupac disses Dre and Puffy in it. California Love (remix) has a better beat than the original (in my opinion) but it's too long. It's about six and a half minutes. Ambitionz Az A Ridah is one of my favorite Tupac songs of all time so I'm glad it was included. There should've been another Dre track though, like Lil' Ghetto Boy. They included the classics like Nuthin' But a G Thang, Let Me Ride, Gin & Juice, What's My Name, Afro Puffs, Regulate (which was on the Above the Rim soundtrack), and What Would U Do. I don't think Let's Play House is that great a track. Cyco-Lic-No would've been a better choice off the Dogg Food album. Also the order of the tracks is weird. The album should've opened with Nuthin' But a G thang and a couple more tracks from their classic era rather than open with a song right when their downfall started. Compared to Death Row's Greatest Hits, released in 1996, this album makes more sense because it includes songs from All Eyez On Me and Dogg Food and there's no filler, whereas Death Row's Greatest hits had a ton of horrible remix tracks that could've been replaced by the originals and other selections. But this album is too short. There are only 13 songs on here. I am not counting the Petey Pablo track, which is garbage. That was just tacked on to make this album seem new. There should've been around 16 tracks. Also, the tracks don't flow well together. For the most part they were just lifted off the original albums without any kind of editing to make them flow. For instance, the last word of the song New York, New York is cut off on here because originally on the Dogg Food album the end of that song really ends in the beginning of the next song. So when you are listening to the Dogg Food album you don't notice that because it flows into the next track, but when listening to that track alone the ending is cut off. They could have at least ended the tracks so that they flow well together. Whoever produced this album wasn't very smart. A 12 year old could've done what that person did. They just compiled a mix cd without thinking about the order of the tracks or how they flow together.
The cover of this album is slightly different from the one depicted on Amazon. Snoop's and Kurupt's pictures are reversed. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why this album was delayed. Originally it was going to come out in February, but I bet Suge took one look at the album cover and said "Put Snoop on the bottom with Dre and put Kurupt on top next to me and Tupac." I am certain of this. He wanted Snoop and Dre to be below him since he doesn't like them. There aren't any liner notes in the insert, just an ad for upcoming albums. I would recommend this album only if you are sentimental about the old Death Row days so you can relive some of the magic! But to everyone else, you probably already own the albums these songs came off of. You're better off making your own mix cd.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disappionting, November 26, 2005
This dual disc re-release of "The very best of Death Row" needs improvement. The dvd side contains 7 videos including "Regulate" by Warren G and nate Dogg, "California Love" By Tupac and Dr Dre and 5 others and although it is a great buy, it is missing one essential video on the dvd side, "Afro Puffs" by The Lady Of Rage. Rage was one of Death Row's most underrated musicians but if Death row is going to give us the song, give us the video, too. If they were to re-release this dual-disc with the video to "Afro Puffs" then it would be worth buying
