4.0 out of 5 stars Brit-Carib Motown, August 22, 2003
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
The Foundations were a racially mixed (white, Black Caribbean, Ceylonese) British group in the late 60's/early 70's heavily influenced by the prevailing Motown sound. Notice the title of this CD is not "Greatest Hits". That's because only two of the songs were hits (at least in the US) -"Baby Now That I've Found You" and "Build Me Up Buttercup", which enjoyed a comeback in the late 90's with its release in the movie "There's Something About Mary." Sometimes a group's "greatest hits" are not necessarily their best songs, but in the case of the Foundations, they are. Still, the other songs on the CD are eminently listenable, even catchy at times. My personal favorites are the earlier songs, sung by lead singer Clem Curtis, who apparently was lured away from the group in 1968 by Sammy Davis Jr. Colin Young took over the lead vocals after that, singing "Build Me Up Buttercup", the Foundations biggest hit, and still a great song. It should be noted that most of the Foundations songs (certainly their best material) was written by a British songwriting duo whose names escape me at the moment.
