5.0 out of 5 stars Get it for "It's a Shame" update alone!
GC's terrific version of "It's a Shame" is a great reason to get this cd. It's a terrific, fun update. Some of these Motor City updates work on different artists ("Stoned Love"--Supremes) and some don't ("Beachwood 4-5789--Marvelettes). This one works and it's at least partly due to the gifted artist performing it. Don't let the 3-rd rate...

4.0 out of 5 stars An underated singer, December 19, 2010
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
When I first saw this album, I thought it was a compilation of Cameron's singles and other songs, but after realizing that his most popular hit, "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday," is not among the tracks, then I realized that these are covers of some of the most popular songs, recorded at Motown. "It's So Hard" appears on the soundtrack of the film "Cooley High," and subsequently covered by Boyz II Men. This particular set from Cameron includes "It's a Shame," recorded by the Spinners during their short tenure at Motown. Cameron sang with the Spinners before embarking on a solo career. One of his singles is included in the set, "You're What's Missing in My Life," which was previously recorded by the Supremes, but only as an album filler. Cameron gives these songs an edge as a strong, soul singer. If you are a Cameron fan, you will probably want this in your collection. As a note, Cameron joined the Temptations; see their "Legacy" album of 2004.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
I assume readers know who GC Cameron is, and some of his previous work. The reviews here at Amazon have varied from 1 to 5 stars, reflecting the full range of opinions about this CD. I am here to settle the issue as best as I can. On one hand, one review suggests that the updated version of "It's a Shame" is enough to purchase this CD. While I thought this might be true when I first ordered the CD, it was quickly obviously upon listening that this is not a very inspired update of that song. There are two other criticisms: 1) poor production (e.g., annoying drum machine) and 2) insipid remakes of classic tunes. I would have to agree with both criticisms, but did enjoy one of the covers. The good news: there are better songs on the CD, including several co-written by GC Cameron himself that are worth the price of the CD. Easily 4 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Commitment!, May 6, 2000

As I have said in previous reviews of G.C. Cameron 's singing ability, he's the BEST. Unfortunately, he has returned to Mississippi to take yet, another course, so there will not be an upcoming CD project on Beach Nights Records as we reported last year. But, at this time (May 5,2000), we're proud to report his tune that Beach Nights Entertainment got him, called "Walkin' Dr. Bill" on Ripete Records with The Tams, is #3 on the Official Rhythm & Beach Top 40. At the request of Mr. Cameron, we're notifying his fans of the following changes. We wish G.C. Cameron all the luck in the world. If you have any concerns about this message and review, you may notify Rickey Poppell at <bchnight@sccoast.net>.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pure and true vocalist from the Motown school., October 3, 1999

G.C. Cameron's voice and vocal style are far above any black/soul artist recording today. "It's A Shame", is not only a great song, but it's a real shame that G.C. Cameron wasn't managed as a true star during his Motown, Malaco and Hot Productions recording deals. Can't wait till he comes out with his new CD on Beach Nights Records. His newly recorded "Walkin' Dr. Bill", with The Tams will soon be available on Ripete Records. If you would like an update on G.C.'s appearances, etc. contact Rickey Poppell at bchnight@sccoast.net
