Editorial Reviews

Peter Frampton's first band the Herd remains one of the great lost outfits of the British Invasion, remembered fondly overseas for their adventurous, highbrow pop (they charted in Britain with a song based on Milton's "Paradise Lost") but largely forgotten here. So, this 18-track collection (the group's album for Fontana plus bonus tracks) provides a nice introduction; includes From the Underworld; Paradise Lost; Sweet William; I Can Fly; The Game; Miss Jones; Understand Me; Diary of a Narcissist (I'm So Pretty) , and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the trio of hits, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Very Best Of / I Can Fly (Audio CD)
The Herd enjoyed exactly three UK hits, and they are all here in magnificent stereo sound. "From the Underworld", "Paradise Lost", and "I Don't Want our loving to Die" all hit the UK Top 20, the latter made it to No. 4. Unfortunately, the band chose to start writing its own A-sides, and that's where they went wrong. Of the other material here, there is frankly little to recommend. "The Game", recorded after Frampton bailed out, is a noble attempt at a commercial record, but its B-side, "Beauty Queen" is actually better. "Diary of a Narcissist" is amusing enough, but much of their other recordings pale in comparision to the hits. If you love late '60s UK commercial pop, get this CD for them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Peter Frampton in the 60's, February 23, 2001
By A Customer

Don't listen to the brainiac that wrote the first review! If you like obscure, British 60's psych, this is a fair sampling of that sound. It's not all great, but not many bands of the era could support an entire album of the stuff! It's not as good as the out-of-print U.S. compilation on Fontana (I'd seek that one out instead of the inferior Collectables version), but an essential purchase for Frampton fans to own.
