5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy for Any Flute Lover!
I've been playing for 4-5 years too, and I can't say enough about what an inspiration this CD has been for me. I should say CD's; there are two CD's, one has more classical music and the other is more contemporary. James Galway is and always has been the model flutist, and this collection of songs are indeed his very best. Check out the fantastic sound clips,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight
Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons,...

A Kid's Review

I've been playing for 4-5 years too, and I can't say enough about what an inspiration this CD has been for me. I should say CD's; there are two CD's, one has more classical music and the other is more contemporary. James Galway is and always has been the model flutist, and this collection of songs are indeed his very best. Check out the fantastic sound clips, particularly "Ashokan Farewell" and "I Will Always Love You." It's so pretty it could make me cry, and I am not an emotional person. Some people think Sir James over-vibrates, but I don't think so. His tone is especially nice in these CD's. You won't regret buying this. I wish I could have rated it higher! Be careful when opening the CD case though because the middle layer swings outwards instead of flipping over like a book. I almost broke the case trying to open it like a book, as that's how most cases are inside.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flutes, April 13, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Very Best of James Galway (Audio CD)
This guy plays so beautifully and soothingly it's scary. I've played the flute for 4 years and the way he hits high E, F, and G it's amazing. If you play the flute and want to listen to a pro this this is the cd to buy. It has titanic, disney, and popular song yet it also has classical and broadway stuff. Did you know he played most of the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack? That cd won Grammys and Oscars. It is definately the album to buy if you want to hear a flute.

Really is one of the best of James Galway, if not the very best. Easy listening, soothing, relaxing - easy to enjoy

Admirers of James Galway as a superb classical flutist, of whom I am one, should be forewarned that this 2002 release has been packaged by the mass merchandisers for the "crossover" crowd and the mass market: there's slim pickin's here for serious music lovers. The first CD contains brief, lightweight classical "hits" in "arranged" versions, basically encore bonbons, while almost the entire second CD is devoted to ephemeral, forgettable pop fluff. There's not much of substance here; given Galway's vast (over 50 recordings) discography, the classical music lover would be well advised to look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Close Your Eyes And It's Like Being There In Person, November 10, 2011

I experienced James Galway performing with the Dallas Symphony and had to have at least one of his CD's. The decision to purchase from Amazon was simple after checking the prices in the gift shop at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The two CD's included in this set separate the versatility of listening to classical or pop.

Two CD set. One CD devoted to popular show tunes and the other light classical. Great music for listening, quiet dinner or nice sound throughout the house.

The Very Best of James Galway

These recordings are pure pleasure to listen to. They contain well known selections, well executed, that deliver a very nice listening experience.

I enjoy Galway's style; these two CDs offer very good value.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for the serious flautist, June 9, 2006
This review is from: The Very Best of James Galway (Audio CD)
Most of the tracks on this CD consist of saccharine fluff, such as Disney, show-tunes, etc. If I buy a flute recording, I want to hear some serious music, not this ghastly schmaltz. And I hate to say it, I'm not a huge fan of Galway's playing style. It's too light and airy, just on the edge of going into overtones. He overuses his vibrato, especially on the higher notes. When you want them to just smoothly soar with rich tone, they just sort of flutter about. He does have impeccable technique and speed, but his tone leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. Seek out another artist!
