Editorial Reviews

From the Artist

Aloha Friends: I am writing to you from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. I live with my family on a small coffee farm on the Big Island of Hawaii with a recording studio on the 3rd floor of our guesthouse. There is never a dull moment here and the weather is always beautiful. I love my life here…part farmer, part musician, part husband and father.

For the last year, we’ve been re-mastering my solo catalog from the original tapes and I’ve been listening to 4 decades of my work and trying to decide which of the songs I should bring to you in this collection. As I listen, pictures come into my mind, of recording sessions, of concerts, of audiences, and all the musicians who’ve played with me over the years and all the engineers who helped us get the music down on tape.

There were many times in recording studios when I felt it was impossible to get the right feel, the right atmosphere, the right sound for a song to come to life. And then other times we were swept up in the magic in the headphones and felt we could do no wrong.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am that music is my life’s work and it’s been gratifying for me to look back and see that I can be proud of every recording I have made so far.

We have tried our best to make this an interesting listening experience for you. Hope you love it and be sure that there is more music to come. - Jesse Colin Young, Kona 2005

Product Description

Co-produced, compiled and sequenced by Jesse Colin Young and David Bean, THE VERY BEST OF JESSE COLIN YOUNG is a comprehensive 2-cd celebration of Young’s phenomenal four-decade career.

Disc one of this specially-priced 2-cd set represents a sonic history from the very first recording of The Youngbloods done in New York City by Jesse Colin Young’s mentor Bobby Scott in 1964, through to the recording of 'Darkness, Darkness' done at Owl Mountain in 1994.

Disc two represents the maverick side of Jesse Colin Young’s music, from 1964 to the present, starting with a new song, 'Eyes on the Prize,' a spiritual inspired by the Reverend Gary Davis.

THE VERY BEST OF JESSE COLIN YOUNG is chock full of special tracks, including 4 Classic Youngbloods tracks (‘Get Together’, ‘Sunlight’, ‘Hey Babe’, and ‘Sometimes’), ‘Four In The Morning’ (a live recording of Jesse’s first recognized hit, originally performed on Capitol Records’ 1964 'Soul Of A City Boy') and NEVER BEFORE RELEASED TRACKS including: A 1998 recording of "Darkness, Darkness’ with guitarist Larry Mitchell, ‘Eyes On The Prize’, the radio remix of ‘Desire’, a new vocal and instrumental interpretation of ‘Lovin’ You’ and ‘Sweet Good Times.’

4.0 out of 5 stars A Jesse Potpourri June 13, 2008
Format:Audio CD
If I were to ask someone, in the year 2008, to name a male folk singer from the 1960's I would assume that if I were to get an answer to that question that the name would be Bob Dylan. And that would be a good and appropriate choice. One can endlessly dispute whether or not Dylan was (or wanted to be) the voice of the Generation of '68 but in terms of longevity and productivity he fits the bill as a known quality. However, there were a slew of other male folk singers who tried to find their niche in the folk milieu and who, like Dylan, today continue to produce work and to perform. The artist under review Jesse Colin Young is one such singer/songwriter.

The following is a question that I have been posing in reviewing the work of a number of male folk singers from the 1960's and it is certainly an appropriate question to ask of Jesse as well. I do not know if Jesse Colin Young, like his contemporary Bob Dylan whom he followed in moving from acoustic folk to electric folk rock, started out wanting to be the king of the hill among male folk singers but he certainly had some things going for him. A fair to middling acoustic guitar but a very interesting and mournful voice in the early acoustic days. Then the switch to electric folk rock and beyond, and the joining up with the Youngbloods that forms the core of this greatest hits compilations.

Jesse Colin Young and the Youngbloods were one of the signature groups of the 1960's not so much for their sound that was a pretty much a familiar one from the period but the lyrics and the politics. Songs like Get Together, Sunlight, Darkness, Song for Juli and some others created a mood of hope (sometimes with dope) that got a number of people through the hard times of growing up in that time. Personally, though as much as I liked some of what the Youngbloods did I still go back to that old Jesse classic from the acoustic days Four In The Morning- that's the ticket. If you need to hear it all though, this is a good bet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Feeling ripped off for the first time. May 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is the most disappointing cd of Jesse Colin Young. I love his music and his voice but this cd sounded like it was very cheaply made and some of the songs which I thought I was getting were not studio recordings but poor recordings of live performances. I ended up buying 2 of his studio cds to get the songs which I thought I was going to get on this cd. After buying at least a couple hundred cds over the last year, this is the first time I have felt ripped off. Still a huge fan.
