Gym floors were shakin' all over this land,
By
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Gym floors WERE shakin' whenever the local AM disc jockey was cool enough to play Joe Tex's latest sermon. Yes brethren, I said sermon. The man was a secular preacher, marriage counseler, and hmmm? what else? oh yeah... a whole bunch of fun too! Wallflowers of both sexes left the walls and danced to 'Show Me','Skinny Legs And All',and ' One Monkey Don't Stop No Show".Joe Tex preached the gospel of the wallflower. The man (kid with pimples) with the raggeddy clothes, the woman (girl with braces) with the skinny legs. He had a great big heart that encouraged everybody to take part and have fun. Everybody. This collection does a good service to both old fans of Joe and newcomers alike. I prefer the sixties stuff myself, but I can still remember driving in my first car in 1972 and hearing "I Gotcha" coming out of the AM speakers. Got me!

Yes, buy it. For the most part the songs, the guitar and horn work, and recording quality hold up and are still as catchy and humorous today as you remember them from when they were recorded. Your kids might even like some of the songs or at least listen with you once. Joe Tex was not one to fluff up his recording sessions with unnecessary violins and other elaborate orchestration; all the cuts have the immediacy of a night club performance. The album has quite a bit going for it besides just nostalgia value: the production quality of this CD seems to be a cut above many historical collections like this... kudos to Rhino on this one. Note: the lyrics are intended to be humorous, human, and down-to-earth (and they are), but some may be offended by the characterizations of women according to their physical appearance as in "Skinny Legs" and "Big Fat Woman."

I bought this CD because of "I Gotcha". I was delighted to find that the rest of the songs were just as good. What a great price for the CD!

One Of My Favorite R&B Albums!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
A classic example of American R&B; one of my most-played albums. Tex had soul, humor, and a good voice. The album has a nice mix of fast and slow, dance and listen, warmth and hardness. Favorite song: Sweet Little Woman Like You.

Where "Rapping" Began,

It was a real bummer when Neil Diamond and Alice Cooper (deservedly so I confess) became inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but Joe Tex, who was in a higher class of artistry, merely got nominated. What weren't the voters thinking? Didn't they have any clue that this man broadened sixties Soul Music dramatically with words of philosophical or comedic intent that often served as a conduit to his own character?
By weaving some "rapping" with his gravelly (occasionally smooth) baritone-to-tenor, he found his niche. Bottling that together with some fabulous R&B, funk and a touch of country bump, he stood tall alongside the best of the Soul Clan. Whether he championed fidelity on the hymn-like "Hold What You've Got", was an adversary of any penalties of social entrapment in "The Love You Save (May Be Your Own)" or invited comparisons between a son and his father in "Papa Was Too", Joe's gospelish voice set the scene for it all to register. His superb novelty number "Skinny Legs and All" was the perfect set up to his great lost novelty, "Men Are Getting Scarce", which is simply the barbecue anthem for the ages. The fact that he is seldom, if ever, recalled is a great injustice of our time. Listen actively to this brilliant taleteller and you'll absorb community, not just in Texas.

I TEACH THEM TO SHAG AND DO THE BUMP. WE HAVE A DISC O PARTY ON THE WEEKENDS. I TELL THEM THINGS ABOUT WHEN I WAS THEIR AGE AND IT BLOWS THEIR MINDS. I Still Miss Joe Tex,
This review is from: The Very Best of Joe Tex (Audio CD)
Could this man make you laugh or what? I will forever love Joe Tex and will forever miss him. When ever I was feeling down I would play some of his tunes and he would pick me right up. Joe reminded me of Richard Pryor because both of them talked about characters you knew and grew up with in your neighborhood. You know like the woman wih the "skinny legs" and the "big fat woman" with the bertha butt. And how about the brother who was always working on his raggedy car. Although all his songs were great I think my favorite one was "Men Are Getting Scarce". I just love the line where he talks about the woman hogging al the barbeque (give me some of that barque girl and kiss me with those greasy lips). And his slow songs were also very thoughtful and soulful ( You Got To Hold On To What Ypu Got, Writing A book). Not only were his songs funny but they were also very funky. He had a bad back up band whose sound still holds up today. One thing that suprissed me was that although I knew that Joe had passed away, it wassn't till recently that I found out that he was only 47 when he died. When I think about it makes me sad , but I have the remedy to perk me back up. I don't wanna bump with no big fat woman, and I don't want no woman with the skinny legs because when I catch her I'm gonna hand her over to Leroy so she can buy him some new clothes and they can ride downtown in his raggedy old car to get some barbeque and some red kool aide. Buy this CD. It will make you feel happy and you will miss Joe too.

I am interested in seeing all the information about this artist as I was his lead guitar player from 1961 through 1979. I am interested in talking with developers on potential projects on Joe Tex's music. A revival possibility to get his music back in the main stream.
