Although he's best recalled by most people for his cover of the Doors' "Light My Fire" or his theme to the TV sitcom Chico and the Man, José Feliciano has enjoyed a long career and was really one of the first Latin artists to break through in the U.S. with his deeply soulful voice. He's recorded a lot of Spanish-language material, but this budget set focuses mostly on his English covers, ranging from a roaring version of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" to the delicate pop flavor of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." Not that the loving tongue of Spanish is ignored; there's "Bamboleo," and the arrangements throughout have a strong Latin flavor, both in the horn charts and bubbling percussion, while Feliciano's underrated fretwork gets thorough airing on "Pegao." From rock & roll to bolero, Feliciano has proved for years that he can cover the waterfront; this is a powerful souvenir of the journey. --Chris Nickson

This double disc is awesome! It has all the hits, and it's a great price for the double disc. And for some reason, the music sounds much better than any other Jose Feliciano CD I have. It must be remastered, or something. If you're going to get a Jose Feliciano CD, I suggest this.

The other reviewers must be blind or be working for the record company that released this slight to the great Jose Feliciano. There are no liner notes except for a summary of his career. There is no recording information whatsoever--no recording dates or previous release info. And, these are not the original recordings of at least some of these songs as recorded in the 60's. For instance, "In My Life" uses background strings instead of flute as on "Feliciano!" on which the song first appeared. "Light My Fire has also been rerecorded. For the others, who knows when and where they were recorded? They are still beautiful recordings, it's just a shame that this is a hastily thrown together package.

Total time is skimpy too: 94 minutes between the 2 CDs.

"The Very Best Of Jose Feliciano" is an excellent showcasing of this excellent musician who has presented some unique, wonderful music. The best song, in my opinion, is his cover of The Doors classic, "Light My Fire." It's a wonderful, original version and Feliciano sings it with spirit, bringing out the romantic essence of the song. Of course The Doors version is the best, but here he makes an excellent cover (it sure beats the lame Train cover in "Stoned Immaculate"). Other covers here like "Samba Pa Ti" and "Malaguena" are also very good. Feliciano shows a unique exuberance in his performing, especially on songs like "La Bamba" and "Bamboleo" which show some of the greatest guitar playing I have ever heard. His acoustic guitar is up there with the greats like Paco Delucia and even the great Carlos Santana (he does play acoustic, as seen in "Maria Maria"). Some songs are truly captivating like "California Dreamin'" and "Angela." This is music for those people who love romantic, deep music but also enjoy a good jam. It has lots of taste and style. And Feliciano's voice sounds as great as the music itself. You have to consider the fact that he is blind, which means his ears are his eyes and here one of the great Latin artists gives us memorable music that stands the test of time.
