Although he's best recalled by most people for his cover of the
Doors' "Light My Fire" or his theme to the TV sitcom
Chico and the Man, José Feliciano has enjoyed a long career and was really one of the first Latin artists to break through in the U.S. with his deeply soulful voice. He's recorded a lot of Spanish-language material, but this budget set focuses mostly on his English covers, ranging from a roaring version of the
Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" to the delicate pop flavor of
Sam Cooke's "You Send Me." Not that the loving tongue of Spanish is ignored; there's "Bamboleo," and the arrangements throughout have a strong Latin flavor, both in the horn charts and bubbling percussion, while Feliciano's underrated fretwork gets thorough airing on "Pegao." From rock & roll to bolero, Feliciano has proved for years that he can cover the waterfront; this is a powerful souvenir of the journey.
