4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, Timeless Songs
I beg to differ with the reviewer who said that-outside of "Sukiyaki"-there wasn't much here to recommend. I think this is a fine collection of the late Kyu Sakamoto. I DO agree that this compilation should have included the FLIP SIDE to that international hit.

The ACTUAL translation is:"I look up when I walk, so the tears won't fall". I might NOT...

2.0 out of 5 stars where's the flip side?
Those in the west who remember Kyu Sakamoto for his
breakthrough hit "Sukiyaki" will find that song and
not much more to like on this cd. In particular, it
was a staggering blunder to omit the flip side of sukiyaki,
namely "Anoko no namaewa", from this collection of his
25(!) top hits.
If anyone knows of a cd containing...

The ACTUAL translation is:"I look up when I walk, so the tears won't fall". I might NOT "endear" myself to Amazon.com's submission reviewer,(this is RARELY done in music reviews submitted here..so bear with me, whoever you are,LOL)but the lyrics are just SO GORGEOUS that-with their permission-I want to translate them HERE:

I Look Up When I Walk
(so the tears won't fall)

I look up when I walk
So the tears won't fall
Remembering those happy Spring days
But tonight I'm all alone

I look up when I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those happy Summer days
But tonight I'm all alone

Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies above the sky
I look up when I walk
So the tears won't fall

Though my heart is filled with sorrow*
For tonight I'm all alone
(whistling)

Remembering those happy Autumn days
But tonight I'm all alone

Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up when I walk
So the tears won't fall

Though my heart is filled with sorrow*
For tonight I'm all alone
(whistling)

*closest translation from Japanese to English

Gorgeous indeed!
And-as with ALL Japanese imports-this recording is
crystal clear! HIGHLY recommended!

Kyu Sakamoto is an excellent singer. When he sings in Japanese he is clear when he sings. My Sons who are 6 & 8 truly enjoy Kyu and his music. They told me it was sad when Kyu died.

Also Number 8 just melts my butter. I also enjoyed his version of Elvis Presley's GI BLues. Now Kyu and Elvis are up in Heaven. Believe me I love Elvis and I also Love Kyu.

I was lucky to find the 45, but the song "Anoko No Namaewa Nantekana" has many hiccups from too much playing. I agree with the other reviewers that this song should have been included.
