Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Import compilation from the '70s Soft Rock singer/songwriter. Though his name may have sounded like he'd be an Indian sidekick on Gunsmoke, Lobo had an extremely successful run of Pop hits in the '70s, mining the same musical ground as David Gates and his band Bread. In fact, to this day, some casual music fans still think that Lobo's hit songs like 'I'd Love You To Want Me' and 'Me And You And A Dog Named Boo' were by Bread themselves! Features 18 original 70's recordings including the aforementioned hits plus 'All For The Love Of A Girl', 'Something To See Me Through', 'One & The Same Thing', 'A Little Different' and 'Rock N Roll Days'. Includes eight page booklet with full lyrics. WEA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still amazing after all these years!, August 19, 2001
By Ernie Clark (Battle Creek, MI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Very Best of Lobo (Audio CD)
For anyone who thought that Lobo retired from recording after his last big U.S.hit "Where Were You When I Was Falling In Love" in 1979, you're in for a big surprise! He NEVER stopped making records! Post Big Tree label albums such as Come With Me, Am I Going Crazy, and the hard to find gems from the 90's, Sometimes, Asian Moon, and You Must Remember This prove that this talented singer/songwriter still has what it takes to produce beautiful music. Sadly, none of it has been available to his many U.S. fans. These cd's were released in Asia in very limited runs on the now defunct Pony Canyon label. This Very Best Of cd features a few of these gems along with newly recorded versions of his 70's hits. The newest song on this set is "Let It Be Me", the old Everly Brothers chestnut, recorded in 2000 as a duet with Nannette Bohannon. Other gems include "Faithful", which in a perfect world should become THE song played at all weddings! Lobo's covers of "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", and especially "The End Of The World" beat the originals hands down. The production on this cd is breathtaking and Lobo's voice has not changed in 30 years. If anything, it's even better! This is one talented guy who deserves to be heard now and not just thought of as a 70's hitmaker. I'm glad I grew up listening to Lobo's music on the radio and not the horrible (stuff) that passes for music today! Lobo, if you read this PLEASE consider releasing this material in a boxed set in the U.S.!!! Buy this cd and listen to what music should sound like. No rap garbage here folks, just soaring harmonies, great lyrics, and beautiful hooks that could only come from one genius...LOBO!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Seventies Music, November 26, 2006
By Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA. (Hercules)) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Very Best of Lobo (Audio CD)
Lobo is one of those talented artists from the Seventies that everyone has heard of, but can't place. His most famous hit was, "Me And You And A Dog Named Boo", a number one hit with a romantic breezy feel with simple chords and lyrics. "I'd Love You To Want Me" was also a big number with Robert Johnson guesting as back-up falsetto vocalist.

The rest of the album is a smart selection of love songs and low key poetic verses of the typical Top 40 genre, but presented extremely well. "A Simple Man" is masterful in it's mood and contains Lobo's earmarked guitar work.

If you like one of the songs on this collection, you'll like them all. It's first rate seventies pop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two classics and other great songs, March 16, 2005
This review is from: Very Best of Lobo (Audio CD)
Born Kent Lavoie, Lobo had three American top ten hits, these being Me and you and a dog named Boo (a novelty song, but brilliantly done), I'd love you to want me (a song he offered to the Hollies before deciding to release his own version after they wanted to change it and take half the songwriting royalties) and Don't expect me to be your friend. The first two of these were also huge hits in Britain. He had several other lesser American hits, but no more UK hits.

On this compilation you will find Lobo's big hits, some of his other great songs and his covers of the classic songs It doesn't matter anymore (Buddy Holly), End of the world (Skeeter Davis), Dream lover (Bobby Darin), Will you still love me tomorrow (Shirelles) and Let it be me (Everly brothers).

Lobo's style could variously be described as soft rock or folk-pop. Actually it was a mix of all these elements. If you like Bread, but you'd like something a bit folksier, Lobo may be just what you're looking for.
