Biography

Biography by Greg Prato

MC Lyte was one of the first female rappers to point out the sexism and misogyny that often runs rampant in hip-hop, often taking the subject head on lyrically in her songs and helping open the door for such future artists as Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Lyte began rhyming at the age of 12, which eventually led to a single, "I Cram to… Read more in Amazon's MC Lyte Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Where is the hit LYTE AS A ROCK!?, October 25, 2002
By
This review is from: Very Best Of (Audio CD)
Pop this one in the cd player/tape deck, sit back, and reminisce. I've been an MC Lyte fan since day one so this was a 'must buy' for me. This album definitely covers most of the hits (and most of my favs) from way back in '88 ("10% Dis" and "Paper Thin", to name a few) on up to '96 ("Cold Rock a Party" with Missy Elliot). However I am a little disappointed that "Lyte as a Rock" (title track from her first album) is not a song on the album. That had to be at least one of the songs/videos that put most people on to MC Lyte. (Yeah, maybe they could have added as a bonus track Positive K and MC Lyte's "Excuse Me Miss") If you don't already own all of the albums, or even if you do, add this to your cd collection. This is a must have from one of the hottest female rap artists from back in the day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best..., May 16, 2006
This review is from: Very Best Of (Audio CD)
You know, Lyte as a Rock should be on this disc (as others stated.) In it's original form, not as a remix because most of the titles are the essential works of Lyte (songs that were released as LP titles.) Though several of these works ARE missing, it woulda been nice if a collector's edition remix album were included as a double disc if Rhino REALLY wanted to do a Best Of for Lyte the MC. It is not easy to find these classic 12"s, but I do have a lot of them (some unreleased to the public.) Do you know there's a remix to the title track, "Act Like You Know," on promo 12" only?! A less pop-ish sounding version, a flipside and harder version than the original. Dope, Dope, Dope ****! A rare jewel like that would not hurt at all. Hey, hit up Rhino with suggestions to any of the missing titles on this collection as I will be doing the same. Ohh, and if you slept on Lyte's Underground Heat, you ain't a true fan (just to let you know.) One.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Very Best . . . But It Could Be Even Better!!!, July 31, 2005
This review is from: Very Best Of (Audio CD)
I love MC Lyte, even today, she is the ultimate female rapper in the hip-hop game, and this 'Very Best' CD is dope. What prevents it from being the absolute bomb is that her very first hit 'Lyte As A Rock' is somehow missing, along with the song that introduced me to her back in the late 80s, 'Slave To The Rhythm', with its slamming track, and 'I'm Not Having It' with Positive K. Overall, though, she knocks 'em out da box with this 10% Dis CD.
