Where is the hit LYTE AS A ROCK!?,
By nizzynizz "nizzynizz" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews

Pop this one in the cd player/tape deck, sit back, and reminisce. I've been an MC Lyte fan since day one so this was a 'must buy' for me. This album definitely covers most of the hits (and most of my favs) from way back in '88 ("10% Dis" and "Paper Thin", to name a few) on up to '96 ("Cold Rock a Party" with Missy Elliot). However I am a little disappointed that "Lyte as a Rock" (title track from her first album) is not a song on the album. That had to be at least one of the songs/videos that put most people on to MC Lyte. (Yeah, maybe they could have added as a bonus track Positive K and MC Lyte's "Excuse Me Miss") If you don't already own all of the albums, or even if you do, add this to your cd collection. This is a must have from one of the hottest female rap artists from back in the day.

You know, Lyte as a Rock should be on this disc (as others stated.) In it's original form, not as a remix because most of the titles are the essential works of Lyte (songs that were released as LP titles.) Though several of these works ARE missing, it woulda been nice if a collector's edition remix album were included as a double disc if Rhino REALLY wanted to do a Best Of for Lyte the MC. It is not easy to find these classic 12"s, but I do have a lot of them (some unreleased to the public.) Do you know there's a remix to the title track, "Act Like You Know," on promo 12" only?! A less pop-ish sounding version, a flipside and harder version than the original. Dope, Dope, Dope ****! A rare jewel like that would not hurt at all. Hey, hit up Rhino with suggestions to any of the missing titles on this collection as I will be doing the same. Ohh, and if you slept on Lyte's Underground Heat, you ain't a true fan (just to let you know.) One.

The Very Best . . . But It Could Be Even Better!!!,

I love MC Lyte, even today, she is the ultimate female rapper in the hip-hop game, and this 'Very Best' CD is dope. What prevents it from being the absolute bomb is that her very first hit 'Lyte As A Rock' is somehow missing, along with the song that introduced me to her back in the late 80s, 'Slave To The Rhythm', with its slamming track, and 'I'm Not Having It' with Positive K. Overall, though, she knocks 'em out da box with this 10% Dis CD.

Return to Simpler Days,

This cd takes me back to a time when I did not have bills to pay or a job to go to: I had the job of growing up. MC Lyte was what I wanted to be. I wanted to make my own way and have lots of money, and live in STYLE. This takes me back and makes me happy that I do not have too many regrets. She was a strong role model who did not rely on prissy primping. . .she was herself. Thanks for letting me go back.

I'm definitely a money saver, but this is one of the few times that I didn't want to buy something used to save money. I wanted her to get whatever royalty amount she'd get for this album because she deserves it. I love this woman's style. When women of today are more concerned with jewelry, booty-tight jeans, and bragging on promiscuity, women rappers of the 80s/90s had much more class. MC Lyte was something else though. She had class, but she also had an edge. Even better, she had VARIETY. She talked about everything from a boyfriend with a crack addiction, being partial to roughnecks, being in love, females testing her out, partying, and anything relevant. She didn't settle on a formula. She was herself and I respect that about her. She is hands-down THE BEST FEMALE LYRICIST ever. I have debated so many people about this because people tend to forget the pioneers, but if I'm around, they get a really loooooong reminder. On top of that, she's still keeping her craft up to par.
Her a capella rhyme "Wonder Years" on MySpace is so raw. I blasted it for months and just checked out the video today after reading her blog. It's very seldom that I can find an artist to blast in my stereo and respect at the same time. I'm usually indifferent about the artist, but Lyte brings so much of her personality into the music (at least what I believe is her personality). But going back to the album, although "Stop, Look, Listen" takes me back in the days of daycamp when I performed this in a dance contest, no song gets me more hype than "Cha Cha Cha." That song is what I play when I'm getting ready to work out. The song isn't even that fast, but it gets me so hype to the point where I WANT to work out. "Rock the Party" is a really cool cut. I like "Poor Georgie"s message, especially since I'm not really the type to walk around saying "I love you" to people so it makes me remember to do it anyway. Pretty much everything on here is something I've played in heavy rotation back in the day and would now. Keep it up, Lyte! P.S. That time you made Tigger blush about the "refined ruffneck" on Rap City was pure entertainment.

I'm disapointed that Lyte as a Rock is not on this CD. It's like releasing a best of Biz Markie and not including The Vapors...
It's Just not complete, this only gets 3 stars!!!

MC Lyte is not just some old school rapper. She is a golden old school rapper. I grew up on her music. Everyone says that Big Daddy Kane, KRS, and Rakim was the best. They are truly forgetting Lyte. Her lyrics has always been tough and savvy. And we all should know that she could hold her own against the female rhyme spitters of today. This greatest hits collection showcase her work over the years. This is a brilliant album and long overdue.

The 1st Female to ......,
By
This review is from: Very Best Of (Audio CD)
She was the 1st female to put the fear of God. I could've sworn a man wrote her lyrics. "Lyte as a Rock"? my goodness no woman has ever clinched the game like she did. NO ONE male/female in the game dissed her. You couldn't, your career would've ended the moment you take your 1st breathe. Paper thin? after listening to that, sooperman luver need to get vest out the dry cleaner to step to this. Lot of memories, ie doorknockers, and that blonde puff hair style. Salute to lyte!
