Despite this collection's "cheap"-looking packaging, it is really not bad (at least not content-wise; see below). Like so many other Monkees compilations, it focuses only on the group's '60s material. It includes most of the group's '60s hits as well as several other good songs that you rarely if ever find on Monkees compilations. (For some reason, it is the album version of "Valleri" [which has a fade-out ending] that is included here. In fact, this set is heavy on songs from The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees album; almost the entire contents of that album appear on it!) However, a few of the selections are kind of weak ("The Poster" has to be the lamest one of all). And, it's missing two of my very favorite ('60s) Monkees songs, "Mary, Mary" and "Shades Of Gray." In fact, for some reason, it doesn't include ANY songs from the Headquarters album, which is peculiar. Also, I have no idea why it's two CDs, since it would have fit on a single CD with about twelve minutes to spare. It isn't a great task to switch CDs, but it's still a bit annoying (although I suppose you could burn them onto one CD, and maybe add a couple of extra tracks, or make whatever other alterations). Overall, this is a decent Monkees collection, but not a really great one. The last time I checked the prices for this collection at this site, the used copies were a bit pricey, and the new ones were a LOT pricey. (I seem to recall it being pretty cheap back when I got it.) So although this has a lot of good songs, there are better, and cheaper, Monkees comps out there.

Very strange hits compilation that reads like it was compiled by someone whose absolute favorite album is "The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees". (How else to explain the bizarre inclusion of weak material like 'Poster' and 'P.O. Box 9847')?The bulk of the album is OK -- but you can get better hits compilations than this. Side Note: I give them credit for the cover -- which includes the Go-Go girls from the TV episode 'Some Like It Lukewarm'. |
