Great music from the early eighties,

This review is from: Mac Davis: Very Best and More (Audio CD)
Mac's main musical legacy is as a songwriter - one of the many songs he wrote for others was In the ghetto, a big hit for Elvis Presley in the late sixties - but he also recorded some fine music of his own. This particular compilation is made up of songs originally recorded in the early eighties. Mac wrote seven of the ten songs here. The most famous of these songs is the tongue-in-cheek It's hard to be humble. You either love or hate this song, but in any case it's not typical of the songs here. Let's keep it that way, one of the three songs not written by Mac, was first recorded by Anne Murray. It was the title track of one of her late seventies albums and was intended to be a single, but that plan was dropped and You needed me became the single instead. Mac eventually had a country hit with his version of Let's keep it that way. For me, the two outstanding songs here are Hooked on music and Texas in my rear view mirror. The first is about his musical inspiration and the second is about his attempt to make the big time. Of the other songs, I particularly like Rodeo clown and the affectionate You're my bestest friend. There is also a fine cover of Rodney Crowell's Shame on the moon. Mac Davis never made it big as a singer, but this compilation is worth a listen if you enjoy country music of the era.

An Album By A Master Song Writer,

This review is from: Mac Davis: Very Best and More (Audio CD)
Sometimes I think that Mac Davis wrote the soundtrack for my life. These songs were hits in the seventies and they are timeless classics. I've played this album for people who had never heard of Mac Davis before and had them say "Yeah, that's exactly how I felt". In my opinion this album is essential for any Country or American Pop Music collection.

I was disappointed that it did not have Hooked on Me as that was one of his biggest. Not even a real picture on front cover. Shame on me for not investigating a bit more before purchase. Did receive in a tim ely manner

Look, if you are reading this review, you probably already know all the songs on this CD. Though there are a few other songs that could be included, these got the most airplay on rock/pop stations. For those new to Mac Davis, during his hey-day his songs might have been described as country-lite or folk-pop. Many songs were covered by other artists. He also dabbled as an actor, playing the role of a pro-quarterback in the movie "North Dallas Forty," supposedly loosely based upon real Dallas Cowboys quarterback Don Meredith. In any event, enjoy the music.

I also bought this CD for the funny "It's hard to be humble". Then I discovered other songs like "Rodeo Clown" which are very good country music. I am sad, that I did not know this singer earlier. I can really recommend this CD.

Mac Davis sang "I Will always Love You",

In the mid to late 70's you sang a song entitled "I Will Love YouAlways" which was different than that of Dolly Parton's. This was as pretty a song as any that you have ever sang. I really do enjoy your music, have listened to it always. I just wish that I knew how to find this practicular song of yours. Thanks a million...

I really only bought this CD for the song "Oh Lord It's Hard to Be Humble"....a great, funny song. The rest of the CD is is - for my taste - too pedestrian "country". I was bored by it.
