If you're not a fan then you'll probably want to pass on it!
Steve Tidwell
There are no blazing guitar or keyboard solos-just simple songs with catchy great lyrics and catchy melodies that you can't get out of your head.

The story goes something like this. Moon Martin was working with Linda Ronstadt's back up band in the early seventies. The band wanted to stay together and go out on their own. Moon Martin decieded not to join them and he went on as a solo song writter and recording artist on his own. Oh yeah, the other players from the Ronstadt Band became- The Eagles.

I'm glad Moon didn't join the Eagles because I would have never heard these great songs. Moon Martin ia usually known (if at all) for writting Robert Palmers hit "Bad Case Of Loving You" and Willie "Mink" DeVille's "Cadallac Walk". Buy this CD and you can hear the original versions.

I first became aware of him when he opened for ROCKPILE at the Ritz Club in NYC in the early 80's. Moon recorded four albums for Capitol Records in the late seventies early eighties. This is a compilation of those four albums. Moon' albums always sound more like professional song demos than finished projects. At first you may think this sounds a little strange, but as time passes you realize that the simplicity of these arrangements make you really appreciate the great writting. There are no blazing guitar or keyboard solos-just simple songs with catchy great lyrics and catchy melodies that you can't get out of your head.

In the late 80s and 90s Moon has had a number of CDs issued in Europe. If you like this Best of CD- search for these other import CD releases. They are all just as good.

MOON MARTIN-THE VERY BEST OF MOON MARTIN: Perhaps best known for penning ROBERT PALMER's toughest hit BAD CASE OF LOVING YOU and the MINK DEVILLE cult classic CADILLAC WALK, four-eyed, BEATLE-coiffed new waver MOON MARTIN had a real way with a wry, twisted lyric...even album titles like SHOTS FROM A COLD NIGHTMARE and ESCAPE FROM DOMINATION evoked dark, vivid imagery. Comparing favorably to better known nerd-rockers GRAHAM PARKER and ELVIS COSTELLO, MARTIN dished out agressive, sinewy axe licks and oddball high-pitched vocals on the chugging, rhythmic ROLENE (his only TOP 40 hit), the skin-tingling sweat-fest HOT NITE IN DALLAS, and painkiller ballad NO CHANCE. The first half of VERY BEST reels off like a volley of power poppin' shotgun blasts form his peak period 70s discs, (including dandy versions of the PALMER and DEVILLE faves), tempered by a less acerbic set of 80s material. This is slick, catchy stuff delivered by a consummate artist with a real ear for harmonic hooks; it's a shame more people weren't exposed to these lunar samples.

RATING: FOUR ECLIPSES

There's something about artists who just skirt the edges of mainstream popularity that draws me. Those who are nearly perfect at what they do, but what they do doesn't really fit into the preferences of the masses. Moon Martin is on my short list of pop/rock/blues musicians that influenced the genres but never broke into the big time themselves or only had brief forays into the white hot spotlight. Some others on that list are Nick Lowe, J.J. Cale, Steve Morse, Chuck Lavell, Paul Barrere.

The only thing that could make this a better album would be adding Bootleg Woman.

I had an album of his back in the late 1970's if I recall right and loved his style of pop-rock! I think Rolene got some airplay on the radio but otherwise you probably never heard of Moon Martin! This is supposely his best...I would say every song is worth a listen and really grows on you! Right now I've got Hot House Baby stuck in my mind and can't get it out!...lol. Very catchy tunes! Very recommended!

Thirty years after most of these songs were recorded, they still sound vibrant and powerful; gorgeous pop music that took wings and soared, thanks to Martin's scorching electric guitar playing and warm vocals. Like honey-glazed ribs and whiskey. Moon Martin may have looked like a geek, with his huge, round eyeglasses and bowl-cut hairdo, but his music packed a delicious power-pop punch. But in the music business, regardless of your talent, your "look" is often the factor in determining your success, thus, homely Moon Martin was left out in the cold, despite a flair for writing ultra-catchy songs. Robert Palmer went on to have a mega-hit with Martin's "Bad Case of Lovin' You," and even the band Mink DeVille enjoyed success with a cover of "Cadillac Walk," but I still prefer the Moon Martin versions. And those two songs comprise just a fraction of the treasure trove of musical jewels that Moon Martin wrote and performed during his abbreviated career. You can't go wrong with this CD: it really is a fine "Best of" collection.

You know Moon Martin you just don't know it yet. He wrote "Bad Case of Loving You" which became a big hit for Robert Palmer as well as writing hits and notable tracks for Mink DeVille and, of all people, Bette Midler. Heck, he had a top 40 hit with "Rolene". You heard it you just didn't know who it was and have been haunted by the melody for the last thirty years.

This collection sounds pretty good. It isn't brickwalled and features a healthy selection from Moon's first three albums (half to over half of each one) and his weaker but still memorable fourth album (three tracks).

What could have made this an even better collection? Perhaps some rarities, etc. and expanding it to two discs but, as it is, this is a fine collection.

Go to the Moon. Take a listen and you'll enjoy it.
