5.0 out of 5 stars Great pre swing big band, January 8, 2006

This review is from: Very Best of Ozzie Nelson 1 (Audio CD)
Terrific CD, a must for any fan of early thirties pre Swing music. Lively arraignments some bordering on Jazz. Ozzie had a great voice (Better than Ricky's in my opinion). Some tracks feature Harriet Hilliard his "girl singer" who he later married. Great fun to hear Harriet sing the Mae West song "That Dallas Man". The transfers could not be better, obviously very clean 78s were used with little or no filtering as none was needed. Highly recommenced!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ricky wasn't the only musical Nelson, June 17, 2005

This review is from: Very Best of Ozzie Nelson 1 (Audio CD)
Ozzie led one of the bigger bands in the 1930's and had over thirty songs chart in the top 100. He had a very pleasant, effective voice and the numbers he chose were generally fun and peppy - the band's style was somewhere between sweet early thirties jazz and very early swing. Harriet joins him on a duet here and there. These are not just novelty records for nostalgia buffs; Ozzie was a fully competent, successful bandleader and vocalist. Lots of great music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Label, January 11, 2004

There's only one remark I have to make. The narrow label on the left of the CD says Vol.2 and the cover and content is in fact Vol.1.It's probably a factory mistake and I don't know if the same mistake is on every copy available.
