5.0 out of 5 stars Magical - quiet nights alone that lift you along, January 26, 2012
This review is from: The Very Best of Regine Crespin (Audio CD)
I've always loved Crespin's version of Berlioz's Nights - long the standard and just rated by BBC Classical as one of the top 50 classical music albums of all time. (I've been less happy with her Offenbach.) She has a large Wagnerian voice that she can take down into an almost whisper. Yes, there are songs where she hits the back wall and in the opera house that is thrilling. But in the quiet of my home it's a bit much for late night. I prefer the Berlioz, here there are are many songs where, like the Berlioz, the voice seems to float along lazily around you embracing you and pulling you in. Marvelous. Only real downside is that infamously dry EMI sound.
