A splendid introduction to Roy Wood's classic recordings, February 17, 2008
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
My Scottish predecessor gave quite a flattering review that the three stars is a most curious rating. Such a rating may reflect that this limited to recordings that were originally issued by EMI Records, mostly on the Harvest label.
A collection of singles A & B sides, several were hits, which if you like the late period Beatle recordings you should find much to enjoy. Roy did work in several styles of pop and rock which included the early 70's fascination with 50's rock and his vision of what the Electric Light Orchestra should sound like during his brief partipation.
Even as varied as this selection is, it more cohesive than many of the collections of his later recordings which makes for a more satisfying experience to listen to album from beginning to the end.
The samples that I would suggest: "Forever", "Down On The Bay", "California Man", "Green Glass Windows", & "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day".
It should be noted that the Move tracks were written jointly with Jeff Lynne and they trade vocals. "Down on the Bay" & "California Man" are fun tracks that stand as precursors to later ELO songs such as "Rock and Roll is King". "Carlsberg Special" & "Bend Over Beethoven" are Wizzard b sides that were written by other members of that band and are interesting in how Roy treated other people's material.
"Forever" has to be the best emulation of Brian Wilson's classic old style Beach Boy recordings ever. "Green Glass Windows" is an exquisite, breezy, inspiriting pop single that few compare.
As with any overview something is always left out, my complaint is the absence of "Green Glass Windows" B side, "The Driving Song".

The Wonderful Wizzard called Roy, May 22, 2002
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
A wonderful collection of songs by a genius E.M.I should be proud of this collection.See my baby is Roy's finest 5 minutes, and even the ever green I Wish it could be Christmas everyday makes an appearance on the album. The album charts Roy's career with E.M.I from The Move ,E.L.O Wizzard & his solo career.Only one sad note about the C.D no one thought to feature Roy's best single from the 80"s Down to zero.Buy it you won"t be disappointed.
