4.0 out of 5 stars She was more than just the "Name Game" singer.
I don't know much about Shirley Ellis, though there are some liner notes to this CD. The songs are mostly quite good, and it seems Ms. Ellis was quite a versatile talent. The "Nitty Gritty" shows her R&B roots, while "Shy One" is more towards the pop end of things. My sense here is that someone should do a more complete overview of her...

The "Nitty Gritty" shows her R&B roots, while "Shy One" is more towards the pop end of things. My sense here is that someone should do a more complete overview of her career-this CD is short on time. However, it does seem to do some justice to her versatile talent. And, of course, it does contain "The Name Game," which still puts a smile on this middle-aged guy's face! Shirley, shirley, bo birley, bonana fanana fo firley, fee fi fo mo mirley, SHIRLEY!

4.0 out of 5 stars I second Minnesota's comments, January 10, 2000

Is it only middle-aged Midwestern guys who remember this talented woman? Anyway, all I can add to Minnesota's review is that I bought this CD for the bump-and-grind classic, "The Nitty Gritty," which exudes sexuality and raunch while still managing to sound cool 35 years after it was played on Top 40 radio. (Believe it!) Of course, she is best known for "The Name Game," but this selection of songs shows Ms. Ellis to be very, very good at delivering just about any style. The sound of these 10 tracks is first-rate. If the CD is reissued, you might consider getting it. I'm glad I did, before it was withdrawn from Amazon's shelves.
