4.0 out of 5 stars remastering is not a positive
This is a great collection of songs by The Smiths - but the remastering has ruined the best aspects of the original recordings. For example "Hand In Glove", which for me had just about the snappiest and most memorable snare sound (courtesy of producer John Porter), but the remastered version reduces the snare to a soul-less dull thud. 3.0 out of 5 stars Horrible addition to The Smiths catalogue.
A band as great as The Smiths deserves better than this. When I first saw this listed for release I couldn't believe what I was seeing. That cover shot is so wrong on so many levels. It tells me that the compilation compilers really don't understand The Smiths. 3 stars is warranted strictly due to the fact that this release is digitally remastered - but truth be told,...

4.0 out of 5 stars remastering is not a positive, December 24, 2005
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
This is a great collection of songs by The Smiths - but the remastering has ruined the best aspects of the original recordings. For example "Hand In Glove", which for me had just about the snappiest and most memorable snare sound (courtesy of producer John Porter), but the remastered version reduces the snare to a soul-less dull thud. All the highs from the cymbals and guitar have gone too.

Perhaps the "Very Best Of.." producers were only interested in forming a unified sound to this whole album, but they've shown no regard for the integrity of the original recordings - and as good as the Smiths were, to me it was their original producers who made their music sound so appealing.

This compilation still gets 4 stars for the songs themselves, which are all winners, but I would recommend all of the original recordings as being far superior in both fidelity and style.

4.0 out of 5 stars pay no attention..., August 10, 2001

....to the rants by the hardcore, judgemental ,lockstep internet fans who have planted some of the above negative reviews. First off, This CD sounds about a million percent better than any of the previous issues of these tracks. How could someone not hear this? I guess that's what happens when you listen to music only on your PC! A big plus is the correct versions of some singles are finally used on CD! Second ,it is a pretty perfect selection and it is sequenced great. Thirdly, the mediocre cover and careless packaging are inexcusable but not fatal. It just makes a 5-star rating a 4-star... Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars One star lost to the vampires, February 4, 2005

There are a lot of fans doing a lot of bellyaching over this comp and I don't get it. There are 3 post band break-up "hits" comps out there, none of them have been "OK'd" by Morrissey or Marr, this one has better sound and more songs. Every A side is here, as are 5 extra "shoulda been A-sides". Comparing the sound on this with the sound on "Singles" is like night and day. You can program this to play in the order the songs were released if you're really that cranky over the random order of the tunes. Until RHINO does a proper anthology this is the best single disc comp. out there. I knocked off one star because this is an unauthorized overview, but I have a pretty good hunch that this is pretty much the same CD that Marr n' Mozz would have thrown together themselves. Keep in mind that there are no "official" Smiths T-shirts out there either but everyone seems to have one. Fans, product, supply, demand, oldest story in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars best representation of the smiths on one CD, June 19, 2003
By
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
yeah, a lot of hardcore smiths fans trash this album, but its because they're insulted by the grotesque cover art and the mispelling of a couple song titles on the back (WTF?), and because the smiths' music has already been repackaged and rereleased so much. however, "Very Best Of" is the best album available to introduce new listeners to the smiths, or give casual fans a bunch of their best songs for cheap. Also, the argument that greatest hits collections aren't as good as "real" albums doesn't really apply to the smiths; they released their music over a period of only a couple years, and specialized in producing tons of great singles which stood on their own, which were then slapped together onto various albums. Its true that you'll eventually need to buy several more smiths albums since they have so many great songs scattered on different LPs, but this collection is a good place to start if you're not a hardcore fan yet.

Warner Bros. did a lousy job splitting up the hits of the Smiths into two fairly short volumes. You should save your money and space on your shelf and just get this one. Any Smiths fan would be hard pressed to find a hit missing on this CD, although "Cemetary Gates" and "The Queen Is Dead" would have been welcomed. Even so, if you only had one album to represent the band, this is well worth the cash. Plus the remastering is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars is it wrong to not always be glad..., March 31, 2004

This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
I'm from the uk, so I got this rather cheaper than it is here. Anyhoo, this is an exellent album and I'm listening to it right now. I chose this from the many Smiths compilations as it had the most songs I liked on it. Nearly every track is amazing, 'I know its over' makes me cry, and there are very catchy happy songs like 'This charming man' and 'Shiela take a bow'. In fact if i listed my favourite tracks I would be listing half the album!
I would definetly reccomend this, never mind if they didnt want it released or the cover is 'wrong'. And you get all their best songs in one place! The booklet also has the song lyrics in it, which is useful. The track order is good, like all the good tracks arn't at the beginning and then its gets crappy, oh no.
I'm quite impressed by The Smiths, they have a sound you dont get nowadays, they are happy but sad at the same time. All the lyrics are very interesting and unique, some lyrics make you laugh, and you can listen to the songs over and over without getting tired of them. I can also relate to a few songs, which isnt usual for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive best of Smiths collection., February 12, 2007
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
I know the story behind this release and all the crap it got from the actual members of the band. This release was not authorized or approved by the band and I believe it's actually out of print. Anyway onto the music itself. Despite what critics and elitists say this is definitely the one "Best Of..." collection from The Smiths that you should get. It has every track from the 'Singles' compilation plus 5 more to boot. It also contains a much much more interesting booklet inside with actual lyrics and pictures of their discography along with track titles from those respective releases.

For a big Smiths fan like myself I have every album and rarities there is to find. But whenever I want to carry one cd in the car with me or for travel I carry this one. It has all the most recognizeable songs on it and I'm happy with that. Now for anyone who hasn't heard of The Smiths and wants to get into them this is a great introduction to the band and the one to get before you become a convert. The only gripe I have is the album cover, it's almost a bad imitation of a Smiths cover but once you hear the music and check out the booklet you forget that. Don't listen to negative reviews or press. An absolute must buy.

It tells me that the compilation compilers really don't understand The Smiths. 3 stars is warranted strictly due to the fact that this release is digitally remastered - but truth be told, most people wouldn't notice the difference. So, do yourself a favour - DO NOT buy this Best Of (or Best Of Vol. 1 & 2 for that matter) and find a copy of Singles. Then buy the individual albums - hell, Amazon is practially giving them away - at least in Canada!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Smiths collection, July 20, 2001
By
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
This is a great compilation of the best (arguably!) Smiths tunes for fans who do not own any Smiths CD's. It's hard to pick the best Smiths tracks, but this one has most of the tracks from the two Best Of collections.

The initial "reviewer" of this album really needs to get a music encyclopedia and read up on the Smiths, because the review was awful and completely missed the sound of the Smiths. FAR from grunge, the Smiths came out of the New Wave era and scoffed at the wasteland of pop and rock music in the eighties, blowing off trendy music and combining a rock/ska/pop sound with dark, hilarious lyrics.

Smiths fans can appreciate this compilation, and if you're one of the rising number of new Smiths fans, this CD is a great starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Smiths compilation to date!, January 29, 2008
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
I am surprised to see so many comments on this release that are not on the positive side. This is the best compilation of the Smiths out there, plain and simple. It covers all of the classics and the remastering on it sounds fantastic! Way better than the 2 best of CDs out there now.

I heard this CD was not authorized by the band, but even if that is the case, the sound quality is too good to pass up. Why haven't they given the same treatment to all their releases I will never know!?
