Hey all you who love the Beatles and everything Beatles related, DO check out "Vol. 1-Greatest Stars on 45" This was never released in the U.S. as far as I know, but it gives you a great medley of Beatles tunes, fading in from one to the next. One of the most exhilirating records I ever owned, now on CD!!! Too cool!!!!

There are some real gems on this CD: The Swing Medley and the Beatles Medley are sweet, and worth the price alone: slick, polished. The rest of the CD, however, was sub-standard. I was expecting something exciting with the Carpenters Medley by Nathalie, but it is awful. The singer tried to sound like Karen Carpenter, and she failed miserably. Her Japanese accent was annoying. The CD has a very odd assortment of tracks, with a couple that are superb. The rest, however, are forgetable.

This is a great CD, but the one thing that's missing is the radio edit of the single "Stars on 45" that went to #1 on the Billboard charts in the 1980s. That was disappointing. All of these collections/songs on the CD are great, but I really wanted the radio edit- which I understand is impossible to get anymore, because of copyright restrictions on the song "Venus" that was in that radio version. (which in my opinion is simply stupid on the writer/publisher's part- it would keep that very old song in the ears of listeners). Anyway, I recommend the CD, but don't look for the song exactly as you heard it on the radio 25 years ago.

STARS ON 45-GREATEST STARS ON 45: Praise (or blame) for the unstoppable early eighties medley craze goes to Dutch producer/former GOLDEN EARRING member JAAP EGGERMONT, whose disco-punctuated mega-mix of FAB FOUR chestnuts, sung and played by uncanny soundalikes, topped the charts and spawned rival efforts centering on CCR, JAMES BROWN, THE BEACH BOYS, among others. The 16 minute, twenty-nine song BEATLES MEDLEY, from which the hit single was derived, is the obvious calling card here, although similar, shorter ABBA, STEVIE WONDER and ROLLING STONES song-mixes are almost as much kitschy fun. The everything-but-the-kitchen-sink dance floor roundup STAR WARS AND OTHER HITS plays like a classic K-TEL platter, with bits of BETTE DAVIS EYES, LAYLA, YMCA, and even the M*A*S*H theme thrown in, while a SUPREMES medley spotlights their perky brand of bubblegum soul, although perhaps a monster mash-up of all the great MOTOWN acts would have fared even better. GREATEST STARS ON 45 is a solid gold guilty pleasure, an attention deficit party platter boasting more hits and more beats per minute than you can shake a glow-stick at.

RATING: FOUR SNIPPETS
