Editorial Reviews

From the Label
The definitive Undertones collection, with 25 tracks including all of their single A-sides plus some indispensable album tracks. Leading off with the anthemic "Teenage Kicks" (picked by influential UK DJ John Peel as his favorite track of all time), the album cruises through the punk-pop gems of their first two albums, the textured pop of POSITIVE TOUCH, and the soul/psychedelic leanings of THE SIN OF PRIDE.

All the key Undertones tracks are here, from the bratty blasts of "Jimmy Jimmy" and "Here Comes the Summer," to the politically-edged "It's Going to Happen," to the upbeat final single "The Love Parade." It wouldn't be an Undertones collection without non-singles anthems like "More Songs About Chocolate and Girls" and "Family Entertainment" so we've included those too. Also here is the non-LP single "You've Got My Number (Why Don't You Use It!)", which many fans pick as their fave. And since some of the Undertones' best tracks wound up on B-sides, we've also included the chocoholic's anthem "Mars Bars" and the cover of the Chocolate Watchband's "Let's Talk About Girls." It's as much top-flight Undertones as we could possibly cram onto a single CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A super best of set from an underappreciated band., August 23, 1998
By A Customer
Some of their earlier stuff is catchy punky stuff, while later efforts veer more towards traditional pop tunes. Either way most of these songs are quite good. You've got a traditional ballsy Irish singer with an attitude fronting a rollicking good-time band. Some of the lyrics are a bit juvenile (especially the early stuff), but there are some classic songs as well. My favorites include "My Perfect Cousin", "The Positive Touch", "Julie Ocean", and the incomparable "Its going to Happen". With 25 songs there's plenty to get excited about. A very worthwhile purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, October 26, 2001
Until you listen to this it's easy to forget just how good the Undertones were. Not every song was a hit, but there's some corkers on here, such as It's Gonna Happen and Teenage Kicks. Just buy it and remember what a terrific group they were, then listen again, and again, and again and ask yourself why they didn't have more chart success.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?, June 26, 2000
By A Customer
The Undertones were one of the great pop-punk bands of their time and this collection of songs is an excellent introduction, thank you Rykodisc. High energy, irresistable beats, great lyrics, Feargal Sharkey's voice, and songs about food, girls and perfect cousins. So many wonderful songs on here, from "Teenage Kicks" right on down. Five stars.
