4.0 out of 5 stars cool....cool....cool!
The pinnacle of the 70's sound is here. The man does it all, ballads, funk, dance. All of these songs bring back memories, especially the few from "The Mack" I jst wish Motown would release his "The mark of the beast" and "Ode To my lady"
from 74 and 75

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I am a huge Willie Hutch fan. I would not recommend this disk though. It seems to be mostly his later music and not the early classics from the films "The Mack" and "Foxy Brown". I would definitely recommend picking up both of those soundtracks instead of this compilation. This disk does include a few tracks from The Mack soundtrack and the theme song from Foxy Brown...

"SLICK" will probably be one of his biggest songs, Willie Hutch will be most remembered for, along with "BROTHER'S GONNA WORK IT OUT", "IN & OUT", "LOVE POWER", and "PARTY DOWN". Let's not forget he wrote "I'LL BE THERE" for the Jackson 5. He will be sadly missed . I'm sure he's in Motown Heaven !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb singer and storyteller, August 28, 2000

More 70's music. You should have been there. I can still see Willie performing his interpretation of The Way We Were on American Bandstand. Outstanding! And what a response he got. I'm sure the off-camera stage crew were holding up applause signs, but the applause for Willie went beyond that. Possessing a distinctive, emotive, melodic voice, he didn't just sing to you, he told you a story, and more often than not, had a way of making you feel what he was feeling. One of Motown's most under-rated performers, it's a shame his only big individual success came with the release of the super soundtrack "The Mack". Make no mistake about it though, the songs on this "best of" are vintage Hutch, the aforementioned The Way We Were, Party Down, Love Power, Sunshine Lady, I Choose You (one of my all-time favorite slow jams), and What You Gonna Do After The Party, being the best of a solid bunch. A welcome addition to my collection. Thank you Motown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another one missed on the radar !, May 25, 2006
This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
Willie Hutch passed in 2005 - - a unique figure in soul music, because like Bunny Siegler, he wrote the songs people sang, could have been a hit maker himself, but spent most his time behind the scenes. Oddly, his strongest works in my mind were the stuff he did for soundtracks like THE MACK and FOXY BROWN - - albums who's soundtracks may not not be as famous as SHAFT and SUPERFLY but are pretty much as funky, bad*ass yet mellow and groovy as you get - - and strangely enough, track by track very hit oriented. (Songs, not just orchestrations!)

Sadly, Hutch never became the superstar he deserved (though its great to see him on some of those old Soul Train episodes floating around!) I think its really sad - - He reminds me a lot of yet another "in the shadows" soul singer: Leroy Hutson - - both had very strong songwriting and orchestrating skills, distinct *driving* styles, yet are not as well known as they should be. - - And if you're not sold on what I'm saying yet, hopefully this great compilation will serve as THE PROOF - - My strong advice however is to get MACK and FOXY instead... great albums listenable straight through!!!

This review is from: Very Best of (Audio CD)
anyone who can put some fareal SOUL into singing 'the way we were' and some extra-extra soul into 'stormy weather' deserves to be... HEARD ...fareal, yall...

and if the fact that he is an excellent songwriter aint enough to persuade, then you have some issues and need counciling...

FOR GOD'S SAKE, HE SANG 'I CHOOSE YOU'!!!!! ... !!!! ... !!!!

that song alone will go down in the "playa's hall of fame" for it's macked-out-funk-on-a-smooooove-tip... right next to outkast's 'players ball'...

if you still continue to sleep after hearin THAT cut, then ...nah, you dont need councilin, you need a LIFE!!!
(at least it was me who told ya, so no hard feelins, right?!?!)

if i didnt love yall, then i wouldn' be here...
it's a dirty job, but it hasta be done!!!

take care of yourselves...
help is on the way!
