Another Faith No More Best Of Collection will no doubt have loyal fans accusing record companies of a pointless cash grab and milking the legacy of one of Alternative rock's most innovative and compelling band's of the 80's and 90's. This is at least the third FNM Best Of collection released over the past 10-12 years and once again this new release features a very small collection of songs previously unavailable, compounding the frustrations of the die hard fans who wish to own all of the hidden treasures of the band (rarities/B-sides), though probably own the majority of these tracks three times over.

On the plus side this collection coincides with Faith No More's triumphant return through their recent reformation and reunion tours. With a new Best Of collection marketed as a new release in CD stores, FNM fans can take heart that this collection may just appeal to a new generation of rock fans not yet enamoured with their diverse, genre hopping excursions and experimentations.

Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collection, complete with ridiculous title and irrelevant artwork, offers another slightly different interpretation of Faith No More's greatest songs. Of course, as with any Best Of release, the content will be open to debate amongst loyal fans. Thankfully for the uninitiated it does present a solid overview of Faith No More's distinguished career, even offering an appreciation of the fun though not entirely essential material of the Chuck Moseley era (We Care A Lot, R `n' r).

The Mike Patton era is the main focus of this compilation, and rightfully so. His creative vision and inspired vocal abilities opened new doors for FNM and took them to a new level of commercial and critical success and admiration. 1989's breakthrough album and crossover gem The Real Thing (the first release with Patton) is represented through obvious hits Epic and From Out Of Nowhere, though curiously the popular funk single Falling To Pieces is absent. This is somewhat compensated by the inclusion of the underrated, sprawling title track.

Arguably Faith No More's best album, the dark, experimental but somehow coherent masterpiece Angel Dust is heavily featured. Some of the great album cuts are included: the darkly melodic Kindergarten, the humorous and catchy Be Aggressive (complete with inspired cheerleader chants), Land Of Sunshine, the schizophrenic Caffeine, and the very much underrated Everything's Ruined (finally making a well deserved appearance on a FNM Best Of) . Of course the big and obvious `hits' are included as well (Midlife Crisis, A Small Victory and Easy).

The highly debated post-Jim Martin phase of their career is reasonably represented. The underrated King For A day...Fool For A Lifetime features their immediate hard rock classic Digging The Grave, the laidback jazzy funk of Evidence and the much loved Ricochet. Ashes to Ashes and Stripsearch are the only tracks featured from the solid though uneven swansong Album of the Year.

The second disc will be relevant for the die hard FNM fans. It features several rare, hard to find or unreleased B-Sides to accompany previously released B-side gems (Hippie Jam Song, I won't Forget You, The World Is Yours). Some of these tracks date back to the late 80's (Sweet Emotion, New Improved Song) while the remainder are taken from hard to find or unavailable singles from the King For A Day/Album Of The Year era.

As a new fan you could do worse then this Best Of collection. Despite some glaring omissions (Gentle Art of Making Enemies, Last Cup of Sorrow, Falling to Pieces) and absent personal favourites (RV, King For A Day, Ugly In The Morning, Helpless), Faith No More's discography is generally well represented with great emphasis on the essential Angel Dust album. The remaster gives a nice update of the older tracks and many of the tracks on disc two are essential listening for new and devoted fans, though the 'Who cares A Lot? Best Of Collection' from 1998 is hard to beat for the new fan. 3 stars

This is a pretty decent collection of FNM's songs....a great mix of "Greatest Hits" and rarities...sound quality is excellent, even for the stuff that I haven't herad on CD before. Obviously this is double-dipping (Or quadruple dipping) since this is FNM's 100th Greatest Hits collection since they split, but I think it's worth the buy for disc 2 alone. Most of that stuff I had on old cassettes, and it was nice to get a chance to upgrade. Snag one!

4.0 out of 5 stars MORE THAN EPIC!, March 17, 2011
This review is from: Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collec (Audio CD)
With this the sixth greatest hits compilation (also the most stupid name of the lot) being no doubt released to coincide with their reformation and tour, Faith No More now have as many compilation albums as studio albums. So the big question is there any thing here that will make you want to buy it if you already have all the albums and at least one of the other compilations. Well to answer the question yes there is, as it comes with a second disc of b-sides and rare releases that most people won't have unless they bought the singles when they came out.

The second disc has ten tracks and starts off with the brilliant Absolute Zero a song that when you hear it will make you wonder how it didn't make the King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime album. The brilliant I Won't Forget You also makes the album, It was previously released on the first greatest hits album Who Cares Alot? New Improved Song was originally given away with Sounds magazine in 1988 so its a welcome addition and features original vocalist Chuck Mosley on vocals, the music from this song would be used again in the song The Morning After from The Real Thing album a year later. Also Sweet Emotion was originally given away with Kerrang magazine in 1989 so its great to get a mastered version here, It has Mike Patton on vocals singing in that nasal voice that he used on The Real Thing. Ashes To Ashes b-side The Big Kahuna is also here. Its not all perfect though Das Schutzenfest isn't great as is the live version of This Guy's In Love With You. In fact they could have left these songs off and included Another Body Murdered and This Town Ain't big Enough For The Both Of Us instead.

As with the other greatest hits (The Works being an exception) its usually a case of what didn't make the album as compared to what did. Their groundbreaking album Angel Dust is well represented with here with seven songs even though disappointingly Jizzlobber doesn't make it. Also surprisingly Last Cup Of Sorrow doesn't make it. But in reality you cant knock any of the music thats included here.

If you are new to Faith No More and only know the single Epic, then do yourself a favour and check this out and you will soon realise that they are much more and better than that song.

4.0 out of 5 stars Collections No More!, February 22, 2011

H3@+h "Over 1500 reviews!" (thanks for the helpful review votes) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collec (Audio CD)
Believe it or not, this is one of SEVEN collections on the market. They had six albums. Now I'm one who could care less how many comps a band puts out (not that THEY released them all). More selection I say, and if you don't want it, don't buy it. Anyway...this is most similar to their first package "Who Cares A Lot?". Both have a disc of "hits" and a disc of bonus tracks. The biggest difference is that first hits was short on Angel Dust songs, and this collection is heavy on that album. Their best album I say, so the edge goes to this collection. This also has five more songs overall. Needless to say get the collection with the songs you want, be it a single disc or double. I'd bet you could get "The Real Thing" and "Angel Dust" used together here for 5-8 bucks. Look around. I just heard Soundgarden is gonna drop a 2011 album. Hear that Faith No More?????

3.0 out of 5 stars This is a weird collection., July 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Very Best Definitive Ultimate Greatest Hits Collec (Audio CD)
This album is very heavy on the Angel Dust tracks, while neglecting some (in my opinion) important singles, and that makes it an inferior product to the very similar Who Cares A Lot, right down to the nearly identical bonus disc.

The only saving grace for for this CD is this is the first time I've personally seen "Sweet Emotion" and "New Improved Song" (both alternate takes of previously existing songs) on CD, but other than that, nothing on this album is really anything we've seen here.

Great songs by a Great band, but like most greatest hits cds, this seems more like the publisher trying to cash in than anything else. Go buy Who Cares A Lot, but make sure you get the 2-disc version.
