Four years after “Cantando”, a new album from the Bobo Stenson Trio – recorded in Lugano last December – explores a broad arc of material. Here we find: free playing (the trio has its own, fresh approach to collective improvising), tunes by Bill Evans (“Your Story”, offered here as a tribute to Paul Motian, for whom this tune was a favourite) and by George ... No one has reviewed this yet, so I thought I might call attention to it for all the jazz/piano/trio fans out there. This 68+ minute set is some early Bobo Stenson, before his "ECM days", when he played with a number of the label's artists, and his style changed a bit. Here he's heard in a traditional, straight ahead trio setting-including long time bassist Anders Jormin, and the good (but relatively unknown) drummer Rune Carlsson. This set (including 3 extra tracks-6,7,8, previously unissued), was recorded in Sweden in the late 80's. If you're worried this has that cool, open ECM sound-forget it. This is some good straight jazz. This set actually floats somewhere between 3 and 4 "stars" because of the fine playing by all three band members.

For those who have heard Stenson with (most notably) Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Charles Lloyd, Tomasz Stanko, or a number of other contemporary artists, this set will be a small revelation. The title is apt-this is a set of traditional piano trio jazz before his "ECM days". Together the trio tackles compositions like Coltrane's "Satellite", Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin'", and Bill Evans' title track. There's only one tune by Stenson, "Coming On The Bike", which fits in well, and shows that he's a good writer/arranger in this setting.

But no matter what the song, this trio breathes a certain kind of life into each tune. Stenson is a sensitive player capable of bringing out the best in each composition. And with Jormin he's found a bassist who can underpin the music, and also step out for a solo when called for. Carlsson is a drummer who listens-something very important in a trio such as this. Together this group's intuitive playing-especially on the mid-tempo numbers (of which there are several) is almost faultless.
