5.0 out of 5 stars I teach 4th grade... July 7, 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is WONDERFUL for showing children (and adults) that there were different types of Native Americans...with different homes, food, customs, etc... No more, "everyone lived in a teepee" Great way to link geography to social studies. Simple enough to read alone (for 3rd-5th)but better if EXPLAINED along the way, using a map and looking at natural resources. I have used this book for YEARS in my classroom, and it always amazes the kids.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, accurate account of Native Americans January 19, 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book to read to my Kindergarten class. The book provides information on several different tribes and their culture. Although I found it to be a bit "wordy" for 5-year-olds, I showed the interesting and colorful illustrations and summarized the parts I felt they needed to know. Overall, a good teaching resource and I will use it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Preschoolers too! December 25, 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I teach a 4's preschool class and recently got this book for my kids. I was worried it would be too wordy or adult for them. However, the book is split into sections that teach about the different American Indians. So every few days, we would talk about another tribe. It was a great way to compare and contrast them. My kids love maps, so we also pulled that into the equation as well. Overall, this book was the best one I found...and it was very informative and, in small chunks, was great for my preschoolers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for 6 year old September 21, 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bought this book for my 6 year old grandson and he really has enjoyed it...and learned a lot about Native Americans from the book. This is a great age for kids to learn things, just seeds of ideas that can shape their entire life. This book is well illustrated, the text is interesting to kids, descriptive and it is amazing what parts of the story they will focus.
I recommend this book for those who would like to guide their children into an interest in native American culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great children's book! December 19, 2012
By Shawna
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book does a wonderful job of presenting historical traditions of native people's without denying or ignoring the struggles Native Americans experienced after their "discovery" by Christopher Columbus. A breath of fresh air for parents interested in presenting a more accurate historical picture for children while still being child appropriate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for kids. November 28, 2009
By MaUnit
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book was purchased to send to the Philippines where two small boys are desperate for books and material for school. Along with pages of Indian pictures from an old calendar, this book will give them some new information that they can use for written reports and also to share with their classmates.

The grandchildren loved this story, and it also provided a little history for them. Things that they won't get in any school.
