Editorial Reviews

Five of Eric Carle's most popular stories bring the wonders of the world around young children into focus. Gentle, colorful music not only enhances the beautiful jewel-like animation but delights the senses as well. Learn to count when THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR eats his way to a magical transformation. In PAPA, PLEASE GET THE MOON FOR ME, a little girl is fascinated by the changing face of the moon. Learning to speak doesn't come easily for THE VERY QUIET CRICKET. Will he ever learn? When THE MIXED-UP CHAMELEON visits a zoo, the experience teaches him the meaning of being yourself. Imagination is the magic carpet to a rainbow world of music in I SEE A SONG. But can you really see a song?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice dvd.... December 28, 2007
This is similar to the Scholastic Video Collection series but it's not the same. It's made by Disney. I'm sure you already know what the stories are. They are nice and slow. The scenes are very true to what the drawings in the books are like. The animation is nice.

Most of the reviewers seem to have bought this for kids about 2 years old. My daughter is 4 and enjoys it. The back of the dvd says ages 5 and under.

My daughters favorite part is the bonus feature. It's a game called Eating Through the Week. There's all 7 days of the week and you have to help the caterpillar choose the food he will eat for that day. Each day has 3 choices and the child moves the arrows on the remote to move the caterpillar to the correct choice. Then they press the enter button. As an example, a pleasant voice says, "Today is Monday and on Monday the very hungry caterpillar needs to eat one apple. Can you help the very hungry caterpillar find one apple? Just move the highlight over the picture of one apple and press enter on your remote control. Great! You helped the very hungry caterpillar eat through one apple on Monday! But he's still hungry. Now it's Tuesday and.........", etc. It's actually a very cute game and the best part of the entire dvd, in my opinion. It's too bad that there isn't at least one more game to choose from. I wish there were games like that on the Scholastic videos, it would enhance them so much. This is the first time my daughter has played a game on a dvd and thinks it's the best.

So, just an fyi....if you are reading these reviews and decide you would like to purchase this, go with the dvd not the vhs. You can find the vhs for cheaper....but I would assume you'll miss out on the game. We got this dvd from the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to our toddler's library January 8, 2006
We bought this in addition to our collection of Eric Carle board books for our two year old son. The narration and animation are beautifully done, and true to the books. The stories are simple and quiet but held my very active toddler's attention completely. I wish there were more of these stories available on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for a 2 year old! May 29, 2007
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
We have scholastic books-on-movie format, such as the "Goodnight Gorilla", and this by far is the best I have seen. I love to watch it with my 2 year old before bedtime. It is the perfect way to wind down for a good night's sleep. She is enthralled by watching her favorite stories that we read together come to life. This is beautifully done with music, animation, and you can even have the words show (you need to choose the option for the hard of hearing, and the words will come up on the screen).

Absolutely well done, Disney! I wish there were more out there like this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars A video for book lovers - top quality October 26, 2006
By mom
I promote BOOKS for my children, not videos. However, this video is exceptional. Beautifully done, it is very much in keeping with the spirit of the books. 'Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me' is wonderful. The music is serene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Quality March 7, 2007
By Mark
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My wife is a kindergarten teacher from Berlin Germany who now lives in USA. Eric Carle is a native German and is famous in Germany with Kindergarten types of teachers. He was also an accomplished marketing exec before turning to his real love - children stories. The quality of this DVD is similar to Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven. It's surprising so few are aware of Eric Carle's ability to relate to small children in the US. This is a real gem. Delightful, brilliant! Julian Nott composes the music which awsome. If you have small children and like fine classical music, give yourself a special treat and order this DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this DVD. June 6, 2006
My two-year-old has to watch this DVD every day. He loves the colors and the cute animation. He always enjoyed The Very Hungry Caterpillar book, and I think it amazes him that he finally gets to see the caterpillar move.

Another favorite story is the one with the chameleon in it. The chameleon visits the zoo and takes on a characteristic of every animal he has contact with. Pretty soon he has a goldfish fin hanging from his chin and eventually wings, etc.

All of the stories are entertaining and calming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle DVD February 11, 2007
I have had this 4-story in VHS since I got it through a book club when I was teaching. My classes were absolutely caught up and I would not hear a sound during each story, 6-10 minutes each in length. Ever since my grandboy was 20 months old he has asked to see it many times over and is still mesmerized by it. The narrator and music are captivating and presented in a soothing, quiet way. I now have purchased all the hardcovewr books that are part of the DVD. My, my what a wonderful surprise those books are in the way they are arranged with flip pages and fold outs helping the words combine with difficult concepts like directional up and down, and concepts like visul perception (looking at the moon as it changes size with distance.) People who watch this DVD compilation see something new every time they view it. The most fun part of that is when the child points out a feature, fact, or some other underlying surprise that even adults haven't noticed, or have assumed that the child is too young to understand that one, therefore passing over it. We show it especially on difficult days. We all three snuggle down with warm vanilla milk and watch with quiet appreciation and let ourselves travel with Eric Carle. For all of us, O-ma, PaPa, and the Mr. it provides an interlude to the day and we all feel refreshed. This DVD is Excellent from the conception of a child to the geriatric years!!
