5.0 out of 5 stars This is my second review - I reccomend it to many of my clients.
What Publisher's Weekly (whoever they are) misses, is the fact that by sharing our authentic story we liberate others with the same hidden issues. I was really excited to get my hands on this book. Having suffered from eating disorders myself, I was hoping it would re-affirm my recovery efforts.

Imagine my surprise and disappointment after drowning in the hubris and shameless self-promotion that pours from every page of A Very Hungry Girl. The book prompted me to write my first Amazon review.

What Publisher's Weekly (whoever they are) misses, is the fact that by sharing our authentic story we liberate others with the same hidden issues. Whatever the author lacks in life experience (how old to you need to be to tell the truth anyway) she makes up for with her no holds barred authentic real voice. This book is not a self diagnosic manual and the author makes no claims that it is. What it is, is a reflection of one persons struggle with her relationship with food, and herself, and life. All of us that have gone through various versions of these things can relate to the book. As a 42 years old physician I found it as meaningful as my 20 year old daughter. That is a pretty good scope for a personal story. FYI, Nowhere does she mention "memoir" or "diagnosing others". However, her belief that there are many more people out there with unhealthy food relationships is much closer to the truth in my ten years of practice then the "offical numbers". Worth sharing with those you love that may need to reflect on their food relationships.

I couldn't believe that there were positive Amazon reviews until I noticed that many of them hail from the author's friends. This manuever is wholly in line with the thinly-veiled thesis of the book. The author hopes to profit from her disease and even more abhorrent, the suffering of others.

I wish I could write that the book is mediocre but at least the intention is heroic, but I cannot.

Please, please, please read Life Inside the Thin Cage by Constance Rhodes for less ego and more inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A GIFT TO MY DAUGHTERS, November 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
I saw this young woman on television recently and rushed out to by her book - not necessarily because I was worried my daughters were struggling with an eating disorder but because I wanted them exposed to such a wonderful role model. As I suspected both of my girls (19 and 22) LOVED the book and related to Jessica immediately.

This book opens up a greater dialogue between familes about body image, weight obession, and the societal view on girls. It inspires you to take action every day in what you can. It made my daughters feel connected and hopeful that they too can touch the world.

Anyone can relate to this book because it is about struggle, journey and triumph. In big and small ways we all have experienced the same thing. I can't wait for her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Filling UP.., December 8, 2003
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
I've always feared self-help books. "What makes them know any better?" I always thought. But after reading Jessica's words and actually feeling her struggle and the struggle of others, I've realized, I have a lot to learn. Empowering, life changing, and amazing, Jessica Weiner's book makes you realize that young women do need a voice, and she is Jessica Weiner. An amazing combination of humor, reality, and a whole lot of soul-searching makes this book a MUST for any woman. You are not alone, and this book allows you to realize it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Satiated Testimonial from a Character in the Book, December 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
Not only am I a recovering bulimic and one of the hybrids of characters in the book, but an avid supporter and honored friend of Jessica Weiner. I am truly blessed to have reconnected with Jessica a year ago only to discover that she had been on a mission to share her story to help other young people speak out. I feel Jessica comes from a place of rare honesty and powerful messages that speak to the soul. I am blessed to be referenced in this book...she did it with anonymity and taste and I hope other's will find comfort in identifying with parts of my input toward Jessica's life experience. My only regret is that this book did not exsist when I was beginning my disorder at the age of 15, for I am sure it could have only helped to halt my disease. I urge any one who is even on the brink of an eating disorder to read this book, for it is informative and truly from the heart. I believe this book is only the beginning of enlightenment Jessica has to offer our society.

5.0 out of 5 stars GET OVER IT - SHE IS THE REAL DEAL!, November 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
I am a new 'convert' to the world of Jessica Weiner. And convert I am! This one woman has changed the lives of several women I know. And I have read through many of the reviews and postings on her book and most people get it - some of you don't. She isn't being self promoting. She is being honest about her journey. She inspires just by telling her story. Every author out there writing self help books is self promoting to a degree beacuse they want you to read their books - HELLO. All I have to say is - if you have ever wondered if you had more to give to the world but didn't know how - read this book. If your friend constantly diets and you don't know what to say to her - read this book. If you want to get insight into how to build a career out of things you love to do - read this book. And finally if you just want to meet a fabulous young woman who truly DOES have people's best interests at heart - then READ THIS BOOK!

4.0 out of 5 stars For once something I can relate with, December 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
I was recommended this book by a friend with a young daughter who met Jessica at a conference. I loved the way this book was written. It was like having a conversation with all my friends at different points in our lives. I was really moved by the powerful stories of how young girls connected twisted body images, relationships and self worth. This is huge, I love that someone wrote a book that takes a fresh look at all human emotions and actions. Society has a voice and she has been listening and made some common sense out of what is going on and how to listen and watch for others feelings and actions.

Very powerful....Thanks, my nieces will be getting a copy for Christmas!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mother In Need, October 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
I have spent lots of money on books and tapes that claim they have the answers to this issue.
This is the first book that comes close to helping our family in a realistic and uplifting way.
My daughter has struggled for years and we just didn't know what to do anymore and then she gave us this book to read and it opened all kinds of dialogue. WE are grateful for this book and will definitly pass it on to our friends and family.
The author is real, dynamic and inspiring. Just what we needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by New Moon: The Magazine for Girls and Their Dreams, January 30, 2004
By
New Moon Publishing (Duluth, Minnesota USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Very Hungry Girl: How I Filled Up on Life...and How You Can, Too! (Paperback)
In Jessica Weiner's book, she talks about her struggle with eating disorders and her path to self-discovery and self-love. Her survivor story is witty and honest. Besides talking about touchy subjects like racism, body image, and moral values, this book gives tools and tips on how to be a positive member of society. Above all, it reminds us to love and respect the beautiful skin we're in. So if you need inspiration or information, or if you're just searching for a delectable page-turner, I recommend A Very Hungry Girl.
