Beautifully Illustrated,
By Judith E. Pavluvcik (Dreaming of the beach in Hawaii, but living in the reality of the desert in Arizona!!) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Very Last Unicorn (Hardcover)
This is a magical book about the last unicorn in the world and the little boy who tries to find the unicorn a home. The circus and the zoo do not appeal to the unicorn, but the woods near the boy's grandfather's home are just perfect for her to live! A group of wild ponies appear to welcome the unicorn and beckon her to join them, where she will be able to live safely. As the boy takes one last look at the unicorn, he catches his breath at the sight that appears before him. The ending is magical and you will have to read the book to find out more! The illustrations are incredible, and their detail will appeal to any child, either young or old!

I found this book on a clearance pile of books at our local book store. What a find! The illustrations are beautiful and the story is one of the simplest and most thought provoking I have ever found in a children's book. I can only hope the publisher will reissue this book. It deserves to be labeled a "Children's Classic"

I don't know what book Ms. McClelland read, but it wasn't this one. She claims "The unicorn seems to be either somewhat whiny or excessively haughty. His repetitious rejection of each suggestion from the helpful boy is a sniffy, "I am the one and only, the very last unicorn in the world." Since this is the only answer given to each turndown, readers are left rereading to make sure they didn't miss something." She obvioulsy missed the enitre point of the book - the unicorn is not whiny, it just wants to find its right place.I'm sorry she didn't like the illustrations, but it's wrong for her to compare them to a different book about unicorns or to one of the artists other works. It would be like comparing Picasso's La Celestine, done in 1904, to his Le Matador, done in 1970. His influnces were different, so the pieces are different. The very last unicorn is a much lighter story. So the illustrations should be lighter. I have to rank this book as my favorite children's picture book. I usually buy a copy for friends when they have a baby. I'm so excited to see some new copies for sale. I owe my niece a copy. This is my 15 year old daughter's favorite book. When she's not feeling well she asks her dad or I to read it to her. |
