2.0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for my son...
I loved this book until we got to the end... it just proved to my son that he should be able to sleep in my bed every night! He is entering a phase in which he's scared of everything at night, so I bought this for him to try to help get him past his new fears. I hoped that it would help him feel comfortable and safe in his own bed. I wish I had read through it myself...

I loved this book until we got to the end... it just proved to my son that he should be able to sleep in my bed every night! He is entering a phase in which he's scared of everything at night, so I bought this for him to try to help get him past his new fears. I hoped that it would help him feel comfortable and safe in his own bed. I wish I had read through it myself before we read it together! The empathy that he feels for Little Mouse validates his concept that his bed is definitely not the place to be at night! It was a very sweet book, but a bit unpractical for parents with children who have nighttime fears.

Woe is Little Mouse, who keeps hearing strange noises whichkeep him very WIDE AWAKE. He implores Big Mouse to share his big bed,but Big Mouse knows how hard it is to sleep next to a wriggling tot sporting cold paws. "No!" is his firm reply, followed by patient reassurance that the noises Little Mouse hears are nothing to be afraid of. As the night progresses, Little Mouse tosses and turns, constantly pestering Big Mouse to reconsider.

Diana Hendry tells a story that is simple, while at the same time simply charming. Jane Chapman caps off the tale with colorful art, full of the kinds of details that make a story worth re-reading--over and over again. Children will delight in finding the extraordinary uses mice can find for seemingly ordinary household items. The ending is satisfying and comforting. A perfect bedtime companion, THE VERY NOISY NIGHT is well worth the investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tale of a Persistent Mouse who Perseveres-Our Favorite Book!, December 1, 2000
By
This review is from: The Very Noisy Night (Hardcover)
About two months ago, I purchased this book for my 3 year old, who is a very persistent little person. She loves this book because she likes to sleep in her parent's bed when she can't get to sleep, just like the Little Mouse in this story, who in the end, after asking many times, "Can I sleep in your bed?" finally gets to sleep in Big Mouse's bed. To my daughter, the moral of this story is that persistence pays off!

I love the book because the story is funny and very "real" to us: tired Big Mouse looks like this tired Mom some nights. My daughter and I also read this book at bedtime almost every night because the illustrations are the BEST of any book we own. They are gorgeous, full of color -- they splash across the pages, and are so creative, making the Mouse home a magic wonderland. I think my daughter would find it hard to get to sleep in the Mouse home, because it looks like such a fun place to play and explore. This book is a winner!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very cute illustrations, not an engaging story, February 8, 2008

Change to FIVE STARS

Wish I had checked this book out in the library first. Love the colorful, cute illustrations, but the story is really lacking and quite uneventful. My son is already bored of it.

Update: somehow after half a year, at almost 3, this is one of my son's fave books. I think its because Little Mouse ends up getting to sleep with Big Mouse in Big Mouse's bed on a night that he is hearing noises, which of course my son loves to do too. The pictures are really adorable even though they are mostly of the mouse's bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read every night, October 11, 2011
This review is from: The Very Noisy Night (Picture Puffins) (Paperback)
A sweet story about a little mouse who is too fidgety to sleep. He hears all kinds of noises and needs constant reassurance that they are normal noises that don't require attention.

My son demands this book every night. And has for the past 5 months, ever since we got it. It is a very cute story. On every page, with every noise, Little Mouse asks to crawl into Big Mouse's bed and is turned down. This is definitely something little kids can relate to.

The pictures are well done. There are little bugs hiding on every page, and it is fun to try to find them.

I think most parents can relate to what Big Mouse is going through with Little Mouse and it is so much fun to read aloud. We all love the pictures too - Jane Chapman is an amazing artist and has done so many fabulous kids books. My kids are 12 and 14 now and I read this to them recently (we were reminiscing about our favorite read-aloud books) and we still love it. This one is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute book, September 20, 2008

My child fell in love with this book when we borrowed it from the library, since it came with a tape. I wish Amazon offered it with the narration, because it made the book a better read. The background music & noises are just so much better on a narrated tape than what I can reproduce when reading it aloud to my child. But even without the tape, the book is cute and does apply to that instance when a child just will not go to sleep. My kids enjoy making the sounds to what is keeping Little Mouse up and they love snoring when Little Mouse finally falls asleep.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations, great story, August 11, 2007

My three year old daughter saw the add for this book on the back of another book she owned and fixated on wanting this. I ordered it for her about a month after she started talking about it. After reading it she said "this book teaches me not to be scared in the night." Somehow after reading this book she is more comfortable sleeping alone in her room.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful!, July 19, 2004

This review is from: The Very Noisy Night (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book. My daughter is 20 months and will not go to bed for naps or in the evening without it. The illustrations are just superb and have so much to talk about and marvel at, and the story is great. I think most of us have been little mouse at some point in our lives! I love this book and am sure it will remain a family favourite for years to come.
