Book Description

December 1, 1982
Widowed Vanessa Damery had two young children to raise, a deteriorating estate to improve, and a household full of pseudo-relatives and dependents to placate. She did not need the advent of her late husband’s cousin (and her co-trustee in his estate). And if Lord Alvescot expected gratitude for his interference, well, he’d have to look elsewhere! Regency Romance by Laura Matthews; originally published by Signet
--This text refers to the Kindle Edition edition.

More About the Author

Laura Matthews has been writing for more than twenty years. She is the author of thirty novels, mostly Regency (as Laura Matthews) and contemporary women's fiction (as Elizabeth Neff Walker). Her love of the Regency period developed from reading Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen.

Ms. Matthews lives in San Francisco with her architect husband Paul and their two dogs. Their children are grown, which gives them more time to travel and explore. Ms. Matthews actively pursues her research interests (the Regency period and medical sociology) by membership in her local Jane Austen Society and by volunteering at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.

5.0 out of 5 stars I found this book to be enjoyable and a good read, April 18, 2001

This review is from: A Very Proper Widow (Paperback)
Why would a most independent young woman want to risk a second chance at love with a maddeningly arrogant nobleman? Clearly pleasing the Earl was out of the question. The Earl of Avescot made it absolutely clear that he considered Vanessa's management of her late husband's estate to be a total disaster. He made it equally evident that he viewed her methods of raising her children to be a sure prescription for ruination. He went on to establish without doubt that he believed her treatment of him as a guest to be the height of outrageous insolence. Vanessa told herself that she should have been overjoyed to have so displeased this man whose departure she so fervently longed for. The only question was: Why wasn't she....?

I think it's a wonderful romance

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best, April 12, 2011
Vanessa Damery was left with an estate and two children when her husband past away. Her husband's cousin, Lord Alvescot, is co-trustee to the estate. He goes there to learn of her expenses and finds many members of the family living there. He questions her motvies and her spending habits.

It was little slow, maybe if the house guests were a little more interesting maybe the book would have been better? Really didn't care to read about Mrs. Damery prior love life with her late husband but that is because I prefer more innocent books.

Matthews is a talented writer and understand this time period well. Her books were written a while ago but now available on kindle.
