5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Old Days
If you started listening to AFI when this cd was released then you know they changed the sound big time. For me that is when I said "I 'll just stick to the first two cds". I'm really not in to thier whole new "hardcore" style they have now. I just saw the video on MTV for the latest single and boy what a laugh. I guess it happens to a lot of bands. But it sucks when they...

2.0 out of 5 stars Asking for it
Before AFI became A fire inside they were asking for it and the band was not too original with their hardcoreness but eventually they wrote some pop-punk songs and became real famous , this is an ok album but sounds kind of repetitive I prefer Answer that and stay fashionable but they are both pretty bland. Davey Havok had shorter hair and used to curse.

But it sucks when they change from a band you like to hear, to band that hurts your ears. I still remember seeing them open up for Guttermouth in 1996 and then hearing this cd played in the record store, buying it like a week after it came out and having many bedroom concerts..hahaha Those were The Good Old Days.

5.0 out of 5 stars A.F.I.'s 1st release is a classic, February 25, 2002
This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
Any fan of the more recent A.F.I. releases would be slightly confused by this release. First of all its not as hard, this cd is less hardcore and more punk. Secondly at this point in time A.F.I. didn't take themselves as seriously as they do now. Most of the lyrics are still serious and of course self-depreciating, but there is a hint of humor thrown in here and there to even things out.
Even though very proud of ya is different than later releases it doesn't mean that it is inferior, in fact it's better than almost all their other cd's (with the exception of shut your mouth and open your eyes). The cd has a snotty punk rock feel, the drums are fast and furious, the songs are catchy with sing-a-long choruses that will get stuck in your head for days. Davey's voice is higher than on the later releases (because he got older, duh.), and he doesn't scream as much, but the music is still incredibley intense and emotional.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Review is For People Who havn't bought any Old AFI yet,, July 14, 2001

This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
Alright this CD is cool, i own all AFI's cds to date, but I gotta say this is my least favorite. Its a good punk rock cd but if you absolutly love The Art of Drowning, Black Sails in the Sunset, All Hallows ep, AFI ep, and Shut your Mouth and Open your Eyes, this could be a big let down for you. Now im not bashing the record at all here, i dont want anyone reading this to get the wrong impression, my own personal input of AFI is that their new stuff is A LOT better than their old punk rock sound on almost every account; lyrics, musicianship, energy, emotion. If you want to check out their older stuff check out their first recording Answer That and Stay Fashionable, I think is has more catchy songs and lyrics, or download some of their old punk rock, my recommendadtions for that would be Perfect Fit, or Highschool Football Hero to get the picture about their first two records. If your into pennywise, NOFX, Millencolin, Bad Religion, and other bands of similar punk nature definatly check it out it rocks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Catchy Punk Music That Is Worth Every Cent, June 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
This is AFI's second full-length album, probably their fastest one yet. The songs are all great. Davey Havok's unique voice and the catchy music from the other members seem to try and outrun each other, each trying to be the louder. You may notice that some of the songs have strange topics, but you will forget once you have been drawn and captured by the sheer speed of the music and the way it just makes you want to go do something cool... It's just indescribable. Just get the CD, it's really worth it and a good introduction to AFI for those of you who haven't got any AFI CD's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and thought-provoking lyrics from hardcore punks, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
Great music, fast and hard, with great guitar and bass riffage, great drumming and Davey's distinctive and brilliant vocals coupled with fantastic lyrical content make this another great release from AFI. Reading the lyrics in the booklet makes you appreciate just how good this punk band is.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hate all of you new AFI fans, April 7, 2004

This album is awesome.. I bought it clear back in 1997 before most people even knew of AFI. I loved it then and I love it now. If fast punk rock is what you're into you pretty much need this CD. It's fast, aggressive and angry. To all of the NEW AFI fans, ones who are saying that this album is terrible only the new is good? Have some respect! In the eyes of many punk rockers who've been down with AFI for a lot longer than you've listened to good music. This is AFI, not sing the sarrow, black sails ect. ect. That's AFI Gothic Edition/Alternative or something. If you're a new AFI fan then buy an Avenged Sevenfold CD but not this one. Because most* new AFI will be unable to fathom this sort of music. Stick to your cheesy soldout punk rock music and dark lyrics, whine all day crap. If you want real reviews on this album search for anyone who posted a review before the "new" AFI. Not these jerks talking about how this music is sooo much worse then new AFI. And anyone saying this is JUST like the Offspring should have their ears checked, then removed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Stuff, June 1, 2005

This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
By far, this is AFI's greatest release, period, if you don't like it, go kiss Raf. "No Dave Party" is an effing great instrumental track, if ya don't know where it is, ya better start looking for it. Every single song on this album is perfect, this is my favorite album of all time. This is the last album with the classic line-up and how fitting that it's their best, no? Geoff went on to play in Tiger Army, he left them and is now in HorrorPops. Geoff's bass playing is superb on this, the Good Stuff to say the least. Mark's guitar playing is pretty good, and Adam's drumming is the fast stuff. Now, good old Davey, the DXH. People will complain and say "He sounds like he's on elium" and that "His voice is too high". Well, the man was 20 when he recorded this, what d'ya expect? The lyrics are really good too, if you look closely, it's got some pretty good straight edge stuff on it. Then it's got the typical outcast, teen fury stuff. If you're a pissed off teenager and dig the real hardcore stuff-7 Seconds, Minor Threat, Black Flag, etc.-not that fraudcore Atreyu, From First To Last crap you should get this. So yeah, best album ever, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Punk CD, February 11, 2003
By
"calipunkrocks" (Santa Cruz, California) - See all my reviews

After seeing this CD get 4 reviews of only 4 stars, I had to write this. I can understand how AFI has drastically changed from "Answer That And Stay Fashionable" to "The Art Of Drowning", and how there are different fans for AFI's different CD's. If you loved "The Art of Drowning" or "Black Sails in the Sunset," you may not like this CD, but I like all 3. This is AFI at its best punk though, and not a single bit of emo or pop in it. Davey(the lead singer)'s voice and lyrics are at its greatest here, and almost as high as Robert Plant's, though not womanly at all. The Guitar is kinda simple, but the bass and especially the drums are amazing! Get this if you're a real hardcore punk fan.

This album is awesome I don't care if you're an new afi fan or an old afi fan you should have this cd.
Very proud of ya is just bursting with energy which is very good if you had a bad day and you need something to forget about it just pop it in your cd player and put the volume up as much as you can and enjoy the ride. Thats what I like so much about Afi even the newer afi stuff you can listen all the way through and love every minute of it. (rock on guys)

5.0 out of 5 stars Go for this., February 18, 2004

This review is from: Very Proud Of Ya (Audio CD)
I have all the AFI CDs, and most of the Ep's. lets face it, while they're still a great band, their earlier music was faster, harder, angrier, and your money would be much more well spent on very proud of ya, answer that and stay fashionable, and shut your mouth and open your eyes. their newer music is more... poetic and lyrically thought-out. this is the music for someone who would appreciate the guitar and drums, instead of a moody ballad or deep lyrics.
buy it, play it.
