Creme de la Simone Creme...,

What an amazing album... The best Nina Simone live (or in my opinion studio) record on the market. Great rhythm section, wonderful selection of tunes, and the remaster is significantly better than the japanese import or the LP. Jazz Times agree, BUY THIS RECORD!

Nina's Live Peak,
By
This review is from: Very Rare Evening (Audio CD)
Nina Simone issued several good to great live albums. One or two were contractual obligations, or sound like it, but this is prime with terrific support. This was also when she finally had complete artistic control on RCA, though there seems to have been pressure to record pop songs (she charted in Europe a lot, a major star). All the same the pop songs she chose - the cream of the Bee Gees, a deconstruction of the Beatles' "Revolution" (she took it further until it was a new song entirely later), and later a mind-bending double-tracked "Cherish", were very good choices. Her earlier live albums tended to be coronations or as if they were in some personal church, so for me this is the best live Nina. Too bad it's on such an odd label it looks like a bootleg, and that will keep buyers away. I have the LP (which I cleaned and transferred) so look elsewhere for advice on the sound on this particular issue, but the source material - stellar.
